Product Description

From the Inside Flap

In a perfect world . . .

We'd get to hang out with Amy Poehler, watching movies, listening to music, and swapping tales about our difficult childhoods. Because in a perfect world, we'd all be friends with Amy - someone who seems so much fun, is full of interesting stories, tells great jokes, and offers plenty of advice and wisdom (the useful kind, not the annoying kind you didn't ask for). Unfortunately, between her Golden Globe-winning role on Parks and Recreation, work as a producer and director, place as one of the most beloved Saturday Night Live alumni, involvement with the website Smart Girls at the Party, frequent turns as an acting double for Meryl Streep, and her other gig as the mom of two young sons, she's not available for movie night.

Luckily, we have the next best thing: Yes Please, Amy's hilarious and candid book. A collection of anecdotes, essays, ideas, lists, and haikus from the mind of one of America's most beloved entertainers, Yes Please offers Amy's thoughts on everything from her 'too safe' childhood outside of Boston to her early days in New York City, her ideas about Hollywood and showbusiness, the demon that looks back at all of us in the mirror, and her joy at being told she has 'a face for wigs'. A delight on every page, Yes Please is chock-full of words, and wisdom, to live by.

I don't know if one can label this book as a memoir. Yes Please by Amy Poehler (or can she be called the author as it has chapters written by others as well?) is a mishmash of advice, humor, essays, poems, and of course, memoir. Yes please, it is a delightful book to read, brutally honest, sincere, witty and at times harsh on herself. I never thought it would be such a pleasure to read as I have a low opinion of celebrities dishing out advice but Amy Poehler's Yes Please turns out to be quite perceptive and refreshingly different.

What is Yes Please all about? A lot! It is a memoir with a difference, incorporating a lot of other things. Amy writes about her two sons Archie Arnett, 5, and Abel Arnett, 4. And mind you, the book is also dedicated to them. Amy has been married to Will Arnett for nine years and the two went their separate ways in September 2012. Both Arnett and Poehler have kept quiet about it. In Yes Please, Poehler describes it as "too personal" and "too sad." She also writes about her parents, how she grew up in the Boston suburb of Burlington, about her school and about her time at Boston College. She writes not only about the good things that had happened to her but also her regrets as well. Poehler also writes about her experiences with cocaine, ecstasy and marijuana, which is why I feel the book is brutally honest. And, of course, there's plenty of tales from Saturday Night Live.

What I really like about Yes Please by Amy Poehler is its intense honesty without giving much juice to the gossip mill. She is brutal on herself, and doesn't paint rosy pictures where there were none. Her memoir reminded me of Mike Tyson's Undisputed Truth: My Autobiography which was also raw and honest.

I love Amy Poehler and her book is not at all disappointing; she writes very much like her characters are portrayed and is refreshingly honest with her words. Definitely recommend.

Remarkable audiobook. Candid novel filled with interesting and funny things, but the Audiobook is something special, featuring special guests and interesting diversions and improvised gags.
