The Right Honorable James Hacker has landed the plum job of Cabinet Minister to the Department of Administration. At last he is in a position of power and can carry out some long-needed reforms – or so he thinks. He is totally unprepared for the deviousness of his Permanent Under-Secretary. Sir Humphrey Appleby has a long and distinguished career of putting politicians in their place and knows exactly how to confuse and manipulate the hapless Hacker.

Contains the following episodes:

  • 1. Equal Opportunities
  • 2. The Challenge
  • 3. The Skeleton in the Cupboard
  • 4. The Moral Dimension
  • 5. The Bed of Nails
  • 6. The Whisky Priest
  • 7. The Middle Class Rip Off

This is a wonderful program...anyone with an interest in politics will enjoy all 3 seasons of this program now available on DVD. It should be noted that this season 3 DVD is BETTER than amazon's product description details. This is actually a TWO Disk set - as well as the seven episodes detailed in the product description, this set also includes the Xmas special that leads on to the yet to be released on DVD Yes Prime Minister series. The DVD includes subtitles, but that's it. An opportunity missed on DVD, but still an excellent series.

Of the three series of Yes Minister that are available on DVD, this is the best, primarily because of the inclusion of the Christmas Special "Party Games" in which Hacker becomes PM. This means that the set is quite good value, for the same price as the other series, although the complete lack of any extra content is a bit disappointing.
In terms of the quality of the shows, I think that series 2 & 3 are quite comparable (better that the first), both are very good although the stories do tend to follow very similar lines and this is very noticeable when you watch episodes in rapid succession.
It would be interesting to see this series make a return, based on the current political climate - how much would change and how much would be the same? Come on, BBC, how about it!

This excellent televison show is now more than twenty years old and yet its needle like wit is still piercing the, it turns out, rather thin veneer of competence encasing the British government. Perhpas most worryingly of all is the fact that some of the issues it lampoons (e.g. an integrated transport policy) are still the stuff of which dreams are made. Buy it, watch it, laugh at it and then roll your eyes and vote for the best of a bad lot.

The Yes Minister is full of wit and though made many years ago still seems relevent today. This disc has some classic episodes and was thoroughly enjoyed - and the episodes can improve with second viewings.

Yes Minister is very funny, even now. The characters are so well acted out, and it still has some relevance today as economies are still being debated about, politicians are still wanting the limelight and wanting their time on the tv to go well. The first episode in this series is about Jim Hacker (played by Paul Eddington) trying to get an Equal Opportunities Bill through parliament after being persuaded by his wife, Annie, as a school girl doing some research asks him what has he achieved and most of it turns out to be all the perks. Now think about it, today our politicians are still in debates about equal opportunities as they enjoy all the benefits whilst the Sir Humphrey Appleby's are saying about "The unions won't wear it." and giving long explanations for why something shouldn't be done if It doesn't suit the Permanent Secretary. Nigel Hawthorn who plays Humphrey Appleby is so clever and so humorous and Derek Fowlds playing Bernard, the secretary is also very witty. All the cast in fact are very strong with great storyiines. I actually recommend all 3 series. With this one you also get a Christmas special on the second disc.

Yes Minister series 3 is a bargain as not only do you get all the funny episodes from the third series you also get the hour special 'Party games', which is the final episode of Yes Minister and leads into Yes Prime Minister. 2 discs with 5 episodes on one, two on the other with the special.

By T. R. Alexander TOP 1000 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on 6 Dec. 2007
Format: DVD
This third set of the brilliant political comedy Yes Minister includes all seven episodes of the shows third series as well as the 1984 Christmas Special `Party Games' that sets things up for the following Yes Prime Minister series. Although personally I feel that this series isn't as good as the previous one, it does include some of the funniest episodes in the show such as the brilliant `The Skeleton in the Cupboard' and the equally excellent `The Moral Dimension'. The `Party Games' special is also great fun and does a great job of setting up the Yes Prime Minister series. The series as a whole remains brilliantly written and everyone involved gives a barnstorming performance. All of this considered, although not as good as series two, this third series is still one of the funniest sitcoms around.

Being a civil servant myself this classic comedy really hits home. It's a beautifully crafted slice of political satire and although it was made in the early 1980s, apart from the fashions nothing much else has changed. This DVD contains all seven episodes from the third series plus the bridge episode 'Party Games' where Jim Hacker becomes Prime Minister in a Machiavellian plot which even Sir Humphrey would have been proud of. This is an excellent series and is still witty and fresh, I do hope that they don't try and re-make it at some point because that would be a great pity!
