5.0 out of 5 stars streisand. director, producer, actress, singer. 11 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
Barbra Streisand describes herself as the actress who sings, however in this film she also producers and directs. Yentl is Streisand's directorial debut and can be described only as a triumph. It is based on 'The Yeshevis Boy' by Isaac Beshivis Singer and is set in eastern Europe at the turn of the last century. The film uses Barbra Streisand's talents to the full, her comic timing and Jewish humour are used to bring light relief to what at times can be an emotionally draining movie as Yentl strives to fulfill her dreams and desires following the death of her father. The film also stars Broadway star Mandy Patinkin and Hollywood actress Amy Irving who received a best supporting actress nomination at the 1984 Academy Awards. The fantastic score written by Alan and Marilyn Bergman with all songs performed by Streisand is surely one of the best in movie history, the songs alone convey so much emotion that they can be seen as the spine of the movie. Yentl is a movie that you will want to see again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars FINALLY!!! AT LAST!!! THE WAIT IS OVER!!! 23 Mar 2005
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
One cannot possibly fathom why this has been released on DVD only now! Possibly one of the least understood films of all times. You love it or you hate it! I love it (always have, since chilhood), but most of you don't! But dispite everything, whatever one thinks, the score is just the best EVER on a movie!!! Camp? Yes! Barbra is everywhere? That too (and good for her)! A personal theme? No doubt! But I can relate to it, although I'm not a Jew myself. But that's only the underlining of the movie. It is about so much more than that! It's about loss, about the will to improve, fight against odds, the questioning of your preordained place in the "scheme of things"! All that with Vintage song writing, uniquely sung by Barbra, at her very best (the 23 second high note at the end of the movie will tell you all there is to know about singing)! For me, no doubt, on of the lauches of the year, long long overdue, and I can't wait to hear it in Dolby 5.1 (I hope)! If you enjoy it half of what I'm sure to, you're in for a wonderful time! And Barbra, by the way, welcome back...!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars DVD is in Dolby Surround Stereo 1 Jun 2006
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I hesitated for so long before finally purchasing this DVD due to the negative reviews posted. Finally I bought it as there is a discount of 54%. Guess what? The DVD is in Dolby Surround Stereo and not MONO as stated. On my home theatre system, I can hear Streisand's voice on my centre speaker whereas the other sounds come from the left and right speakers as well as my rear speakers.

The image is in widescreen. I don't remember the aspect ratio in the cinemas so I cannot comment if the image has been cropped. The quality of the image is excellent with very minor specks. At the present discounted price, this DVD is a real bargain. Who knows when the Streisand colour-approved DVD will be released in USA. Even "A Star Is Born" has been delayed so many times. Why wait when this DVD is a quality product?

5.0 out of 5 stars a musical wirth a message 20 July 2007
Firstly, box of this dvd says it's "full frame" but that's a bit misleading as it does have the bands at the bottom and top of the screen, so I guess it's widescreen although not "anamorphic" as a previous reveiwer also states (thanks for that btw - it made purchase the dvd, which I'd previously been hesitant about).
It's a great film, Barbra is delightful with a great supporting cast, some of who you will know their face from British tv etc.
The songs are all wonderful and I always find watching this movie quite inspirational. It's one of my favourites.

4.0 out of 5 stars Musical worth watching 22 Jun 2007
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Great movie. Slow moving at times, but always entertaining.

I don't know what Streisand's original intention behind the film was, but I imagine the story, however unlikely, certainly challenged Orthodox Jewish conceptions of the role of the sexes.

Amy Irvine is a bit wooden, but the rest of the roles are well acted and the story holds together well. If your up something a bit different I recommend this DVD to you, despite the technical discussions that have gone before!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 11 Sep 2001
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
Get this movie.
It is one of the most moving and brilliant pieces of film ever made. It must have the most underated score in the World, why this is not generally known as one of the all time classics I will never know.

Barbara Streisand impressively directs, writes and stars in this story about a young Jewish woman who disguises herself as a man to study the books that woman are forbidden to read.

The simple plot is a feel good journey which has a good mix of humour and drama and while at times it does feel like it may be pushing itself a little too hard in becoming unrealistically modern for the period the film is set in, it is very well written with a great and refreshingly unexpected ending. Direction wise Barbra dose a great job at the helm even if it really could have made use of more locations as many scenes end up feeling far too familiar and almost stale.

Being a musical Yental has a great score with some memorable songs (Papa Can You Hear Me? being my personal favourite by far.) and Barbara herself doses a great job as the only singer in the film, which helps the film keep a better sense of drama then some other musicals.

Yental has a great cast, with Barbra doing a brilliant job as Yental (Even if I have a hard time believing she looked or sounded like a guy...) and it's a role which really shows what a talented woman she is. Mandy Patinkin is equally brilliant as her best friend Avigdor and the two have a real chemistry around them which helps makes the romantic side of the plot feel very real. The only complaint with the cast I can find is that I can't understand why Amy Irving, who plays Avigdor's fiancé Hadass, was nominated for an Oscar. She is good in the role but is on screen for very little time compared to the other cast members and even when she dose eventually appear she ends up doing little with the role compared to the likes of Barbra and Mandy, who I think both defiantly deserved but lacked nominations for their acting roles.

I hadn't seen this for years, had loved it first time around, and wasn't disappointed in the slightest. It hasn't dated a bit and Barbara's voice is stunning.
