Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
This latest compilation release from Deutsche Grammophon, hot on the heels of The Yellow Guide to Opera, consists of not only three CDs but also a 144-page booklet which provides biographies of 100 composers, a glossary explaining 100 musical terms and notes on each of the 42 tracks recorded on the discs. Aimed, clearly, at newcomers to classical music, the three discs cover almost five centuries of music arranged chronologically, from the Kyrie of Palestrina's Missa Papae Marcelli to Philip Glass' Violin Concerto. Orchestral, chamber and vocal--all are represented, performed by a roster of celebrated names: the Amadeus Quartet, Argerich, Vienna Phil and Karajan to name but a few. All in all a value-for-money way to either become more familiar with classical music or glimpse some of the treasures of the DG archive. --Rebecca Agnew

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolutely brilliant variety of top notch performances, 18 Sep 2000
By A Customer
DG have come up with truly the best compilation of popular classical pieces. The performances, such as that of Haydn's Emperor Quartet and Rossini's William Tell Overture, are excellent. The booklet which comes with this CD is extremely informative and gives details of every track on the CD and of 100 composers.... I would definitely recommend this CD, especially to those who are looking for a new collection of different pieces. Forget 'The Best... in the world ever' - they're not nearly as good as this CD!
