Review first posted in The Gardener in France blog 2/3/2012

There are some guide books which in our family are always kept in the car, so that whenever we go out for a drive we can find a great pub, hotel or, in the case of The Yellow Book, a garden to visit. This indispensible guide lists over 3,800 gardens in England and Wales, opened to the public on behalf of the National Gardens Scheme to raise money for charity - £2.6 million last year.

This wonderfully British institution seems to sum up all that is best in the country, sharing our collective passion for gardening and our benevolent concern for others. I have used editions of the Yellow Book since my student days, dropping in on hidden horticultural gems scattered about in every corner of the country; I've met some great gardeners, genuine enthusiasts and people with amazing amounts of knowledge and talent.

Every so often I have dabbled with the idea of opening our garden under the scheme, but never had the courage to do so. I have built gardens for clients which would be more than suitable, but I'm not sure I have ever owned a garden good enough and I am not sure I could cope with the criticism. This year a series of lectures will tell us how it's done and encourage timid souls like me to have a go: it's all in a good cause!

Another great innovation is launched this year - an iPhone application which will locate gardens near to you and provide all the details - all very clever. The Yellow Book itself is set out beautifully; after a county map of the country each of the counties has a section to itself. Bedfordshire for instance starts with a map with each of the gardens given a number. A calendar on the opposite page shows which gardens are open on which day each month.

This book lists all gardens opening for the National Gardens Scheme between January 2012 and early 2013. It covers all of England and Wales and divided up into county sections, each including a calendar of opening dates and details of each garden.
Most of the gardens are privately owned and only open on just a few days each year - some only once. Others are open on a regular basis, or as part of a village group opening.
I didn't know much about the National Garden Scheme until I picked up a booklet at Goltho Garden in Lincolnshire. I then discovered the website and after a few hints, received the book for Mothers day.
I particularly enjoy visiting halls/gardens that are not generally open to the public so those that are listed in Lincolnshire and in the countys close to me will be my first choice when planning some visits.
The admission fees are reasonable and a big proportion of monies raised goes to various charities. Every visitor is mainly helping to make a contribution to those that really need care and support through times of personal crisis and life threatening illness.
I've already been to one or two of the places mentioned in the book when they were open for snowdrop viewing and my mission this year is to to visit many more of them.
If you enjoy visiting gardens then this book is the ideal guide. Refreshments are usually available and at very reasonable prices too.

This is essential reading for all those who enjoy visiting special gardens. It is the product of The National Gardens Scheme. The NGS is celebrating its 85th Anniversary this year and has been supporting nursing charities since 1927. The NGS is now the largest benefactor to Macmillan, Marie Curie and Help the Hospices in England and Wales. It donated £550,000 to each of these charities in 2011.
Find out about delightful gardens in your area that open their doors and welcome you throughout the year. Most also derve a delicious cream tea!

The Yellow Book lists private gardens open to the public for the Yellow Book scheme and is a must have for anyone who enjoys visiting other peoples gardens, buying plants and enjoying afternoon tea and cakes or an evenng glass of wine in a garden. Proceeds from these fun activities go to very worthy charities.

Buy this book every year and make the most of the beautiful gardens at all times of the year. This week explored the wonderful Stanway Gardens in Gloucestershire and the magnificent 300ft gravity fed fountain. Spectacular!
