Review

'Not just a very funny book, but it is actually a primer in individuality' Sunday Telegraph 'Glorious...without giving the ending away, it must be said that the life of a black spider can be as hazardous as that of a normal biscuit' Observer 'Wacky' Sunday Tribune

Product Description

Yellow Bird is an individualist who just wants to do his own thing. Staying in hotels, eating ice cream, wearing socks and playing the guitar are just some of his jolly pastimes. Sadly, Black Spider disapproves and attempts to encourage Yellow Bird to be more conventional. Yet, in this delightful and anarchic picture book, the individualist definitely wins out in the end with a spectacularly unexpected conclusion.

What a fantastic book! The story will make both adults and children laugh and the illustrations will appeal to even the youngest reader (my ten-month old son loves them -especially the ice cream cone!).

I bought this for my neice and she and I both love it. The authors' style is very unusual, with photos of household items mixed in with the more traditional illustrations, but it works very well and is very distinctive.

The story is equally appealing, and the ending pleases a four-year-old very much! An excellent book.

Laugh out loud funny. 19 Oct 2010
By DD67 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
My day care children love this book, they think the clever yellow bird who enjoys going to a hotel and relaxing, boating, and then eating is so funny. Yes, this book ends in the yellow bird announcing he eats spiders and then munching up the spider. The ending of the story is similar to "The Wide-mOuthed Frog", but the steps it takes to get to the ending are different and the out-come doesn't end in the spider escaping.

This would be great for a spider theme, or to go with the gingerbread man story.
There is very little text, with big colorful illustrations that show great expressions on the yellow bird. I would recommend this for a 2 to 3 year old, or for a very quick read and discussion with 4 to 5 year olds.

could also, use this book with a toddler or 2 year old still learning colors.
Adorable little unconventional morality tale 9 Sep 2008
By Nicki Heskin - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is a really cute story of the conventional black spider and his relationship to the unconventional yellow bird. The spider, with his very cutely drawn little judgmental spider faces questions the bird over and over about "Why don't you..." [do the conventional things birds do], like sing a pretty song, fly, build a nest, eat some worms. The bird replies that he/she (doesn't specify) prefers to sail, to play guitar, to stay at a hotel...and on the final page

**note... this will be a "spoiler" -- but most of us WANT to know how our children's books will end, especially when there is a moral, so here goes...

rather than eat worms, he/she prefers to eat spiders.

A little morbid maybe to some, but in my opinion a really poignant message about how those of us who are unconventional aren't just going to sit back and take hassling from those who would prefer us all to just do what is expected of us.

I am sad this book isn't currently available for regular purchase, but in my opion well worth picking up one of the marketplace copies available. An excellent gift for a child in an unconventional family.
