Yehudi Menuhin was indeed a legend, and it's good to have this double-CD as a memento, though it does have limitations. I miss the East-West fusion Menuhin created with Ravi Shankar, and the wonderful recordings (available on Biddulph) which he made when 12 years old. I'm sorry not to have anything by Bartók, notably the great solo sonata he wrote for Menuhin in the last year of his life. This collection of pieces--movements rather than whole works--treads a more traditional line, sticking to the pieces which made Menuhin a household name. And if his Paganini is strained, his Beethoven rough at the edges, and if his Vivaldi lacks the polish of a Mutter or a Kremer, his Bach and his Elgar are matchless. For Yehudi was not primarily a technician. His supreme virtue lay in his voice: his violin was the expression of his soul. That's why the rare Wieniawski "Légende" is so compelling here, and why the Brahms feels definitive. He also had immense charm: check out the lovely Gershwin numbers in which his talents combine with the complementary ones of Stéphane Grappelli. --Michael Church

Absolutely stunning violin player, but some of the music on these DVDs are a bit dour. It's still joyous to listen to such a geniously talented violinist though
