Biography

Steven Patrick Morrissey (born 22 May 1959), known primarily as Morrissey, is an English singer-songwriter. He rose to prominence in the 1980s as the lyricist and vocalist of the alternative rock band The Smiths. With Morrissey's comback albums, particularly Ringleader and Refusal, there are faults that stop them from reaching the heights of Morrissey's best works. However, both of these records are still solid Morrissey records, though not perhaps as great milestones as Your Arsenal, Vauxhall, Viva Hate and Quarry. The positive of this album is that Morrissey's lyricism has improved since Ringleader and his voice is still strong, particularly on the spectacular 'It's not your birthday anymore,' but unfortunately the music backing these songs does ruin the album a little.

There are some tracks that don't suffer from the new sound, which is a more straight forward, garage rock kind of sound which is a nice change in direction from the orchestral Ringleader. The opener, Something Is Squeezing My Skull is a prime example of the music working well which is reinforced by the stunning, Mama Lay Softly on The River Bed, but it kind of loses fire after that with Black Cloud. It begins really well with some great guitar work that gets you ready for a standout track, but then the rock kicks in and it isn't good. It has a sludgey kind of sound that tarnishes what could have been a great song. It is fortunately saved by I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris, which is probably the lightest song on the album.

Other tracks ruined by bad backing music are the appaling, That's How People Grow Up and the otherwise great penultimate and final tracks, Sorry Doesn't Help and I'm OK By Myself. Preceeding these is You Were Good In Your Time which has a really long near silence that goes on for about two minutes. It's OK the first time you hear it but wears thin a little after that.

Super stuff, great tracks and delivered in no time at all. Its good to get things you like and thats what happened here. I enjoyed this fine CD and will contune to do so. You cant stop me and i dont care if you try. If you like Moz, go for it, if you dont, steer clear.

Not everyone's cup of tea, but I love Morrissey and this album contains many moments of brilliance-such as the black humour of Carol and the cheery singalong I'm Throwing My Arms around Paris (With a Boz Boorer clarinet solo and a super cool video). And who can resist the gangleader with a babe in arms? Class.
