Product Description

Product Description

This creepy collection of true life tales takes the reader on a tour through the streets, cemeteries, alehouses, attics and docks of Liverpool. Drawing on historical and contemporary sources and containing many tales which have never before been published, it unearths a chilling range of supernatural phenomena, from the Grey Lady of Speke Hall to the ghost of John Lennon airport. Copiously illustrated with photographs, maps and drawings, this book will delight anyone with an interest in the supernatural history of the area. It is the first complete guide to the paranormal history of the region.

I found the print to be too tiny, as if I needed a magnifying glass. It was a strain reading the small print. Otherwise, these short tales seem believable.

What is it that makes a good ghost story? and further, what makes a good /collection/ of ghost stories? I suspect there are as many answers as there are stories but most of us will recognise the merits of something downright chilling, perhaps with a twist in the tail, and an indefinable element that lingers with you long after you have finished reading.

This book delivers!

I'm loathe to give details on the stories because more enjoyment will probably come from reading John Reppion's flowing prose style - but look out for "The Woman Through the Wall" and "Stanley Park Lodge".

The illustrations, a mix of photography and different styles of illustration, are a feature of this book - is it something common to the series? - with a brief note on all seven artists so that you can find more of their work. The variety really enhances the telling of the stories and some of the photos have caught the atmosphere of something having just stepped out of shot... Or is it that something is just about to step into the picture?

I would have liked an index - but that lack is more than balanced by the lists on sources which mean that anyone wanting to delve more deeply can do so.

And that rare and desirable effect of the lingering story? I suspect the quiet summation of Old Walton Junction will continue to give me more than pauses for thought.

I have long been interested in many of the subjects covered in this book and consider it a fine addition to my library. The book covers much of the ghost stories of Liverpool in an even-handed and fair manner, the authors attempt to get to the bottom of these mysteries is clear with many references and original research - unlike many writers of Liverpool's ghostly past Reppion actually delves into the past of Liverpool and provides background information. This is much more than just a re-hash of word of mouth tales. A worthy addition to any serious Liverpool paranormalists library!
