This recording beautifully captures the energy, enthusiasm and optimism of the 2001 New Year's Day Concert in Vienna. Harnoncourt's choice of music, while adhering to the tradition of concentrating on the Strauss family, includes a number of pieces new to the New Year's Day concert, as well as the old favourites. His inclusion of the original orchestration of the Radetzky March (which is also heard in its 'usual' form as the traditional final encore) adds a new twist. The waltzes and polkas he has chosen display the talents of the orchestra, and indeed his leadership, to great effect. The quality of the recording is excellent, but at the same time it retains the live atmosphere that is so much a part of the New Year's Day concert. With this recording everyone can all feel the joy and optimism of New Year's Day every day of the year!
