Generally regarded as pre-eminent in a long series of recordings of the annual New Year Concert from Vienna is this CD providing seventy minutes of highlights from the 1987 concert where the conductor was Herbert von Karajan and the soprano soloist was Kathleen Battle. The latter, with the courage of a tightrope walker without a safety net, succeeds easily with the daunting eight-minute test Johann Strauss Jnr provided in his vocal waltz "Fruhlingsstimmen". The waltz is performed uncut, and conductor and singer vary dynamics and tempi in perfect accord throughout. Karajan reveals some of the darker hues and frenetic jollity in the Josef Strauss items, he underlines some of the sweetness and exuberant energy in the Johann Strauss Jnr items, and if the audience's participation in the father's "Radetzky March" is not as disciplined as we sometimes hear each new year, it still provides a rousing finale.
It may be hard to find and highly priced in 2002, but this is one CD you will never regret adding to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars the best vienna new year concert ever 5 Mar 2011
Format:Audio CD
Having listening to more vienna new year concerts, I loved Karajan and Kleiber's ones more.
C. Kleiber captured the lightness spirit of those polka and waltz but also gave them unequivelant music momentum, amazing.
But what Karajan did is even more amazing. He was old, tired, and ill, but when he conducted, the music was incredibly shining, warm, and most importantly spontaneous. If you have watched DVD, you will find that actually both conductor and orchestra seem enjoy the moment. That can be heard from the CD. The music is very relax, but strangely can't be more perfect in details. Wiener Philharmoniker gave a golden color sound here; I don't know why Kleiber's orchestra sounds a bit 'cold'.
This is probably the best performed Strauss recording, and probably the one with most music-enjoying atmosphere. The live-recording feeling is a big plus. The only problem here is: two pieces of music (Gypsy Baron overture and Kaiser Waltz) are not included in the CD. People should find them in the DVD.

Amazon is a completely open forum, so, providing a rule against obscenity or something is not contravened, any half-wit, including me, can post an opinion - and boy does that sometimes become obvious. One here tells us that Karajan's conducting is old, tired and without energy and another that we should skip Kathleen Battle's contribution as she has a nasty voice and no idea of Viennese style. It's still a free country (more or less) but never have such people made a better case for censorship - except that it's probably more effective to let their inanities stand as self-condemning. I’d love to apply the blind-listening test to the former to demonstrate a water-tight exemplar of someone hearing what they intended to - the other one simply needs a hearing aid.

Anyway, to business; it is touching how that complicated and immensely gifted old ego-maniac von Karajan finally got the offer to guest-conduct a Viennese New Year's Eve concert when he was ill and ailing and always in pain from his back injury - yet you would hardly guess that from the lilt, lift and spring of these performances of a medley of the Strauss family's loveliest melodies. Boundless energy and aggression are hardly required in such music; rather wit, charm and delight are in order. Karajan and the VPO are clearly enjoying themselves. Just before listening to this, I played another famous New Year's Eve concert recording from Berlin in 1992 with Abbado at the helm of the BPO; that is also a glorious affair but rather more serious than this one, being dedicated to the works of the other Strauss. This recording is all smiles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb New Year's concert from Vienna 3 Mar 2010
Format:Audio CD
This CD is the traditional concert that we like so well, i.e. all of the pieces are by Johann and Josef Strauss, recorded in Vienna in 1987. In recent years other pieces have been substituted for some of these old favorites, probably for variety's sake, but we love the familiar polkas and the "Blue Danube" walze.

The recording is excellent. The orchestra is directed by one of the best: Herbert Von Karajan. (I just wish he had some women musicians in his orchestra.)

A lovely way to spend New Year's Day.

4.0 out of 5 stars A unique event 24 Feb 2010
By Geoff
Format:Audio CD
This is certainly a special recording simply because it captures Karajan and the Vienna Philharmonic live in repertoire that they were both steeped in. The orchestra plays magnificently throughout of course and the recording is weighty and atmospheric. It is certainly one of the best of the New Year concerts released on CD and a souvenir of a great occasion. And yet to my ears a lot of these pieces are played significantly slower and more weightily than befits them. Recently I have been listening to Carlos Kleiber's slightly more recent New Years concerts (1989 and 1992); both seem to me to be more stylistically in tune with the music and have a real glitter and swagger about them. Having said that those recordings are less good than the DG one here so maybe there is no perfect solution but I feel we maybe learning more about the music listening to Kleiber than Karajan.
