Review

That's what the Caine Prize is about: celebrating the genius of human diversity. The idea is to enrich the world through its greater contact with Africa, and to enrich Africa through its greater contact with the world - Ben Okri, 2009 --New Internationalist

Product Description

Celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Caine Prize for African Writing often referred to as the African Booker Prize this book showcases all 10 of the winning stories, which have emerged from Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Uganda and Zimbabwe. From the traditional village to the riotous cacophony of the capital city, from the chill of exile to the cell of a prisoner of conscience, these stories reflect the vast range of modern African experience. As a special bonus it also includes stories by the three African winners of the Booker Prize Nadine Gordimer, Ben Okri, and J.M. Coetzee, whose contribution Nietverloren is published here for the first time.

A good sampler of Aftrican literature 13 Feb 2011
By Cognitive Scientist - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I purchased this book because I was participating in a reading group that decided to read African literature for a while. No one really knew what books to read, and -- after taking a look at what was in Amazon -- I thought this would be a good first reading. Although my opinion did not prevail, I think I was right. The Caine Prize is a prize for the best short stories written by Africans. Here one can find writing by black Africans who are not nearly so well known as some of the white African writers. They have a very different perspective. Many tell essentially the same tragic story of efforts to survive the chaos that followed the end of colonial rule.
Poignant stories 23 April 2012
By CM Ramirez - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
These are superbly written stories. They are poignant and represent both the array of writers from the African continent as well as the African perspective itself. The story of refugees escaping through Kruger National Park brings into focus the conflicts of privilege versus those who are victims of colonialism, racism, poverty, and war, but also of protecting the remaining nature; the struggles of land use, of cultural paradigms, of moralistic issues. These stories will enlighten you on much of Africa and African perspective and experience by some of its most talented and perceptive writers.
