'The writing is assured with first rate characterisation and narrative drive' - Susanna Yager, The Sunday Telegraph

Product Description

In the poetry of John Donne lies a motive for murder; A female sports celebrity has been murdered - her face mutilated in a bizarre, ritualistic manner. What is the significance of the strange text the killer has left at the crime scene? Why did he surgically remove the victim's left eye? And can a Cambridge lecturer help the police reconstruct the killer's fantasy in time to save her own life? As Inspector John Underwood and his team frantically try to piece together the last hours of Olympic athlete Lucy Harrington, events take an unexpected turn. Harrington's murderer contacts English Literature lecturer Heather Stussmann and invites her to explain his actions to the police. And when another woman is murdered Stussman realises the key to understanding the killer's terrifying motive lies buried in the works of a poet who has been dead for nearly four hundred years...

5.0 out of 5 stars A cracking thriller. What an amazing debut!, 3 Dec 2001
This review is from: The Yeare's Midnight (Hardcover)
This is a really impressive first novel - tightly written, with a superb plot and brilliant characters. O'Connor is a gifted writer who will, I hope, get the attention and popularity he deserves. This is a genuine thriller, and I would strongly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding debut, 24 April 2002

This review is from: The Yeare's Midnight (Hardcover)
Strong characters, literary allusions, metaphysical poetry, relationships both explosive and implosive, a liberal sprinkling of expletives, and, oh yes, some truly gruesome murders. This book is not only a gripping page-turner of a read but also a most welcome twist of an old genre: one could almost say a real who-Donne-it! The intelligence and finely crafted writing of this outstanding debut novel represent a great start. I'm already looking forward to Ed O'Connor's next work.

4.0 out of 5 stars dark and creepy, 10 April 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Yeare's Midnight (Hardcover)
this is a sophisticated serial-killer novel full of literary and historical references. the characters are strong and their motivations and hangups draw you into the story. the atmosphere is generally dark and creepy, with gruesome violence used sparingly and some morbid humour. recommended.
