Slam are best known for one of the all-time great techno tunes, Positive Education, but they haven't quite nailed the album thang til now. From the thumping post-9/11 politicised house of opener This World, Year Zero sets its stall as Slam's most confident and polished piece of work yet. There's a more song-based approach than previous long players, the best example of which is Bright Lights Fading, a fab piece of melancholic Yazoo-style synth pop featuring the voice of former Electribe 101 chanteuse Billie Ray Martin. If you're wondering where the straight-up house and techno that Slam are known for is in all this, then fear not, the likes of Lie to Me and Human are sweaty club music par excellence. There's even some slammin' old skool electro in the shape of Metropolitan Cosmopolitan and a couple of eerie downtempo nuggets in the name of Blow Your Mind and the ghostly Kill The Pain.
Great stuff and more proof that dance music ain't dead yet.

Slam show their class with year zero which in a way is a concept album - it tells the story of house music and techno since the heady days when acid, deep, vocal and instrumental music was mixed up together- its a homage to the origins in detroit and chicago with some great songs and mindblowing instrumentals- it's not a typical club album in that its aimed at the car stereo and the home hi-fi more than the dancefloor. The 12 inches that accompanied this release -remix packages of lie to me / this world, by dave clarke, whignomy bros, freestyle man, hugg & pepp, phil kieranand more recently bright lights fading, with kill the pain remix from runstoprestore and human by swayzak promised before the end of 2005- keep the vinylists and djs happy!

Not heard of Slam before. Reviews looked good thought I would give them a try. Wow, really impressed. All the tracks are grand; dance music with passionate but melodic rhythms and though sparce, great vocals. Somewhere between house and chill-out they have a very distinctive sound of their own. Don't know why not heard of them before but so impressed that I bought their other albums.
