Product Description

Kirriemuir Herald, June 2008

'amusing story of an English journalist's adventures... will leave you with a smile on your face!'

Product Description

'It was time, the editor told me, for a more modern approach to Germany...The three of us were the backbone of the British press corps. No cliche about Germany left the country without us having given it our seal of approval.'Laugh-out-loud funny, this is the memorable story of an English journalist's adventures - including his encounters with women - as he tries to get to grip with the Germans. Facing bankruptcy, Roger is advised by his accountant to make use of a legal loophole: in Germany married couples have their tax bill halved. So the search is on for a German bride. Meanwhile his father, a former bomber pilot and war hero, is also in financial trouble and is threatening to move to Germany and sponge off his son.The combination of financial, romantic and parental crises sets in train a hilarious romp during which we discover more than we really wanted to about speed-dating and nudist beaches, the British media obsession with Adolf Hitler and how to cheat at the Berlin marathon, curry wurst and stuffed cabbage. Writing incisively and almost without prejudice, Roger Boyes describes the peculiarities of everyday life in Germany.

3.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable book, 21 April 2008
By Ms. Sv Lewis-morgan "Ex-pat English bookworm" (Thueringia, Germany) - See all my reviews

Firstly, I have to say that my German partner and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and it made us both laugh all the way through. BUT (and this is the reason I give it one star fewer than I would otherwise have done), the subtitle (as with the original title of the German edition) is a trifle misleading in that it suggests that the book is about the author's experiences in learning about Germany, Germans, the German way of life - it's not. It is a snapshot of the experiences (fictionalised or not - I suspect a large part of it might be) of someone who has lived in this country for a long time, is obviously fluent in the language and is familiar in the ways of his adopted country. So it does miss a lot of opportunities to introduce plenty of characteristics that the author by now takes for granted. However, having had my little moan, I would still recommend the book to anyone who wants a good light read.

1.0 out of 5 stars Misleading title, 20 Jul 2009
By Peter A. Allen (Bishop's Stortford) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is not about getting to know the Germans at all. It is purely a story. In many parts it lacks credibility. His description of the marathon is particularly poor. No mass marathon starts with a pistol or allows the average participant to mix with elite runners. He also bought a suit in an Oxfam shop which simply do not exist in Germany. His fathers and friends hatred of the Germans is ludicrous in the extreme.
If you want to get to know germans and Germany there are far better books to buy. There are also funnier books if that's what you want.

3.0 out of 5 stars my dear krauts, 11 Jan 2009
i read this book in german ("my dear krauts: wie ich die deutschen entdeckte") , but can only assume the same problems exist in the english version as in the one which i read.

the book is dubbed as a humourous investigation into the german people and their ways, and to be fair about half way through it does get funny, but the writing style and disjointed nature of the book make it somewhat unpleasant to read, which is quite alarming coming from a professional journalist.

i was also left with the strong impression that some of the incidents reported in the book were completely fabricated, or certainly vastly exaggerated in an attempt to be funny. sadly, this is an opportunity missed.

there are some interesting sections, and its worth a light read if you want some german practice (i can't imagine this english version is worth reading) but there must be better such books out there.
