Reviews

From Amazon.co.uk

Director Harold Ramis leans away from the Groundhog Day side of his personality and toward the Caddyshack side with Year One, a broad comedy set in more-or-less ancient times. The film's cockeyed timeline puts two wandering cavemen (Jack Black and Michael Cera) through a rapid-fire series of biblical events: Cain (David Cross) slaying Abel (Paul Rudd), Abraham (Hank Azaria) preparing to smite his son Isaac (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), and everybody converging on Sodom, the Genesis equivalent of Las Vegas. The jokes range from droll religious references to Apatow-ready testicular gags, but almost all of the real humor comes from the efforts of the performers to put things across. Black and Cera couldn't be more different in their styles, but each manages to conjure up some laughs just by working in his particular vein: one can appreciate Black's exuberant extrovert pouncing all over the material like a needy Golden Retriever and also savor Cera's muttering wallflower as he flicks in his sidelong observations. Azaria and Oliver Platt are given very long leashes--they know what to do with that kind of room--and Ramis himself plays a mighty-bearded Adam, but it's all not quite enough to prevent Year One from falling into that hard-luck zone with Caveman and Wholly Moses: one more comedy that suggests the ancient world wasn't really all that funny. --Robert Horton

Product Description

Harold Ramis directs this Judd Apatow-produced comedy set in a twisted version of the Biblical era. Jack Black and Michael Cera star as Zed and Oh, two lazy hunter-gatherers who set off on an epic journey through the ancient world after being banished from their primitive village.

3.0 out of 5 stars This film will have you laughing 10 Aug 2010
By Rebecca
I was put off watching this film for quite some time due to many bad reviews, however I was glad I eventually thought I would give it a chance, and I'm glad I did. This film will have you laughing as the comedy pairing of Black and Cera works exceptionally well, if you're in the mood for a senseless comedy then this is right up your street and will not disappoint.

3.0 out of 5 stars Better Than 10,000 Years BC! 18 Oct 2009
Well this probably won't be one for the "In The Loop" fans who panned my review of that movie, but if you're looking for a bawdy Carry On/Scary Movie style homage to the caveman genre this will be up your street. Not that the plot matters much in this sort of film but it does kind of spoof 10,000 Years BC. Unlike that movie the only cringing you will be doing is from some of the more squirmish humour.

As others have commented, this is really for adults only and would not recommend viewing by under 15's.

Jack Black is back on form as I didn't enjoy Be "Kind Rewind" at all.

Embarassing moment for me...I actually thought at first Michael Cera's character was a girl!

There's all sorts of cameo appearances, the highlight probably being Vinnie Jones as a sadistic soldier. Be sure to stay for the gag reels during the closing credits.

This is not a movie which is going to win any awards but it made me smile and at around 90 minutes is perfect for a bit of silliness to unwind from a busy day.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the funniest films ever! 4 Jan 2010
I went to see this film and couldn't wait for it to come out on DVD as I have never laughed out loud so much while at the cinema. I have watched it twice over Christmas with family who also really enjoyed it. If you are into Jack Black and silly humour, this film is a must!
