First of all - the cover art. Fantastic. I know you aren't supposed to judge a book by its cover, but let's be honest, we all do. You get exactly what the cover leads you to beleive - a story with a strong female lead set in a harsh, desert world. Jolan is being hunted by her clan who now want her back after realising they made a mistake by exiling her in the first place. Jolan has learned to survive on her own and now doesn't want to go back. Seeing both Jolan's resourcfullness and her compassion made this a really engaging story. I liked the ending and was glad she does what she does (no spoilers!). Well written with great characterisation.

For a short story, "Year of the Mountain Lion" is packed with rich detail, an imaginative plot, and strong writing. It left me wanting more, as any good story should, and I found myself intrigued by the protagonist Jolan and her backstory. There was a good tension throughout, and enough hints to a much wider universe and cast. But ultimately, this story is about Jolan and her own personal journey in exile.

The cover art by John Dotegowski is gorgeous, also rich in detail, and perfectly captures the type of character Jolan is - brave, resourceful, and independent.

This is a gripping, exciting story, but perhaps its most memorable characteristic is the atmosphere and sense of place. Set in a desert not unlike south-west America, it leads us through Jolan's journey through a landscape we can feel in all its parched, searing reality. It's perhaps this quality of making us feel every step of the story that makes us care so passionately about Jolan and her survival.

As the other reviewers have said, the cover is stunning, giving a perfect preview of a fine tale.
