Product Description

BBC Review

Joshua Tillman sounds like he has the weight of the world upon his shoulders – but this is no weary old man singing of a life of loss and regret. For Seattle, Washington’s Tillman is still (just) in his twenties, and has simply adopted the timbre of a hobo busking on a bench with a can of strong lager at his side.

Unlike most hobos, though, the ups and downs of life have not turned Tillman into a ranting maniac; instead, he purrs over sparse songs. But what he does have in common with most guitar-toting vagrants is that he has confessions to make about what he’s done wrong. This is most evident on the track Though I Have Wronged You – a delicate, thoughtful affair.

Of course by rights Tillman should now be producing X Factor-style song and dance extravaganzas in celebration of the almost universal acclaim that has been lavished on him in the last couple of years. For, as the drummer with Fleet Foxes, he’s been on the receiving end of countless positive reviews written by middle-aged music journalists who love the band because they channel the spirit of ‘greats’ like Nick Drake and Neil Young.

But Tillman is happy to sound unhappy despite the fact that, critically, he can do no wrong. Although slightly more upbeat than his previous effort, Vacilando Territory Blues, Year in the Kingdom still makes for a pensive listen.

There are still moments on this album when his minimal, finger picking approach can verge on the soporific, but these moments are the exception rather than the rule. The highpoint comes when Tillman breaks free of his self-imposed shackles and surges forward on the song There is no Good in Me. For a moment here he builds a choral crescendo that rivals Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon at his chest-banging best. --Chris Beanland

5.0 out of 5 stars Substance and style 4 Dec 2010
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
In a world that seems to favour gloss and spin over substance it's so refreshing to come across music that's deep and earthy, simple, beautiful and true.

I won't go into the detail that the previous reviewer has but I will say only this. Buy one Tillman album, any one, and you will have a classic that will last and that you'll never tire of. My only caveat is that if you do buy one you'll want to buy them all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome 21 Nov 2009
By Ishmael - Published on Amazon.com
I heard Crosswinds on KCRW today and was an instant convert before I even heard the vocal. J. Tillman is the drummer for a famous alternative band from Seattle. His solo music is stark, evocative, and powerful. Year in the Kingdom is beautifully produced, with a kind of magisterial restraint. In the words of some anonymous internet pundit: "For a guy with the back catalogue (and quality back catalogue) he has, why is he not a superstar?"
2.0 out of 5 stars It's okay. 27 April 2013

I first listening to this while on the road, and nearly fell asleep. Recommended for bedtime listening, or trying to relax. Great poetic lyrics, as usual for him. Personally, Fear Fun is a 5, whereas Year in the Kingdom is a 2. It's very good, and as far as I am concerned, Josh Tillman is one the best out there. This particular work just doesn't grab me, personally. What is nice to know is that he just keeps getting better, whereas so many artists get stuck in a creative rut that they can't dig themselves out of. Somehow, I doubt that will ever happen with him. He' just outstanding.
4.0 out of 5 stars quietly powerful 24 Mar 2013
By Donald E. Gilliland - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I agree very much with Ishmael's glowing review of this album, but I'm not quite blown away enough to give it 5 stars. At least not yet. But this is still a quietly powerful, intensely good collection of songs. I'm tempted to dub Tillman an "American Nick Drake", but that might be an unfair comparison. Nevertheless, there are parallels in the reflective, acoustic nature of these songs and the way they resonate with the listener. I'm also puzzled why J. Tillman is not better known, especially after the relative success of his most recent project, recording as Father John Misty. That album was one of my favorites of 2012, so wanting to hear more by this guy, I hunted this CD down and have been enjoying it very much the past few months. It's much more laid back and introspective than the Father John Misty album, but still a consistently good bunch of songs. Tillman possesses an excellent voice and the material he composes and sings on this album is a perfect vehicle for those vocals. Only about 35 minutes of music on this album, but not a note is wasted.
