Book Description

An advanced alien civilization sends out probes to study and preserve different planetary cultures and biospheres. A probe evaluates Earth and determines that humanity is headed toward extinction due to self-inflicted environmental degradation. In order to make Earth sustainable and to save humanity, the probe decides that Earth’s population must be radically reduced.

The probe is programmed with prime directives that force it to make all interventions culturally appropriate. Since pop culture is full of movies describing the end of the world by zombies and vampires, the probe manufactures viruses that create an outbreak of these creatures. Ninety-eight percent of humanity is wiped out by culturally-sensitive environmentalist aliens who are here to save us.

This is a story of people living in Salt Lake City, Utah when the alien probe destroys the world. The unlucky, slow, and foolish die quickly. This isn’t a typical zombie apocalypse story about a bunch of victims wandering the world slowly getting picked off one-by-one. This novel is about people, who refuse to be victims. They understand that the only way to survive is to band together and to control their environment. The aliens, zombies, and vampires need to be taught that on Earth the top predator will always be human.

More About the Author

Jack J. Lee is a sober, unassuming doctor who is the general manager of a multi-physician group in the United States in Salt Lake City, Utah. By night he is a wild, hedonistic author in the unlimited confines of his mind. Like most happily married men, he lives in mortal fear of his beautiful, intelligent wife who he does not deserve (his wife will read this bio). Therefore, he limits his hedonism to his imagination.

His first two books are part of a series called Sustainable Earth. 'Year of the Dead' and 'Death by Revelation' are currently available as digital downloads. These books are about the world being overrun by zombies and vampires. When asked, "Why zombies and vampires?" He responds that authors are encouraged to write what they know. Everywhere he goes (highways, classrooms, banks, and driver's license bureaus), he sees zombies and blood suckers.

His most recent eBook is called 'Hero's Curse'. It's volume one of a new series, the Paladin Files. As of yet, he's been unable to come up with a funny anecdote of how he came up with the idea for this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb 21 Jan. 2012

Downloaded this for free and wasn't expecting too much. Two chapters in I was hooked. It gives a different slant on the usual Zombie book and turned out to be a real page turner. It has an eclectic group of characters who shouldn't really have worked together as well as they do. By the end I couldn't wait to download book two. Fast paced and makes you think, where ,or could, i fit into this group? Well worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lot better than expected 13 April 2012

Got this book free, it was a surprisingly different zombie story, If zombies were for real, I would use this book as a survival guide, lots of fun information, there were lots of plot lines, and works as a stand-alone book, and when I discovered there was a sequel, I bought it, and wasn't disappointed. This author really knows how to keep the reader interested. One of those books you wish you could erase from your memory so you could enjoy it all over again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Something Completely Different 18 Nov. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
When I open a book about zombies and/or vampires, I expect a lot of gore and people running around screaming and trying to hide in completely inappropriate places as they get picked off one by one. All very entertaining, or I wouldn't read them, but that is nothing like this particular book!

There is very little of the screaming in this book, though enough to get your heart going a little faster from time to time. It's intelligently written, seeing the situation from many points of view, many kinds of characters. It tells you how these people decided they were going to survive and what they do to ensure their survival. If I was to suddenly find myself in a situation where I needed to know how to live a long life in the midst of zombies and vampires, this would be my handbook.

The vampires in this book are without doubt the most terrifying ones I've ever read about. They are have no human qualities remaining, they have become ravenous, feral animals and see humans only as food to be played with and then eaten. Very, very scary.

I can't wait to get dug into book two of this series. Book one was so good that I didn't want it to end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff!!! 14 Mar. 2012

Zombies, vampires and a pesky alien - what's not to like? Oh, and it's free too.

This guy knows how to write. The pacing, story and characters are spot on. I can honestly say I can't wait to get my mitts on the next part of the story if it's anything like this gem.

I think I'll leave it at that as the other reviewers have said pretty much what I was going to say.

Mr Lee I doff my cap to you sir.

But this book kicked ass.

You know a book is good when you're checking to see how much the sequel costs. I read this book free, halfway through I was checking to see if there was a sequel, there is, yay!

Amazing book, I literally could not put it down. Buy it now, you will not be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mormons vs Zombies - and Vampires! 3 Oct. 2013
By Amazon Customer VINE VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I've read a lot of Kindle freebies in the Zombie genre, and 'Year of the Dead' effortlessly outclasses most of them. It's not literary fiction (fortunately) but it's intelligently written and the short sentences, told from different viewpoints (including someone turning into a vampire, not the pale and moody conflicted kind that teenage girls like but a terrifying, almost unkillable thing that lives to feed, likes to play with its food, and can jump 40 feet in the air) really grip you. It's an adrenaline white-knuckle ride - most of the characters are hard-assed alpha male types (most of the rest of us wouldn't have survived, after all) but their self-awareness makes them believable and interesting.

The rationale for the zombie and vampire outbreaks (it's the fault of an alien civilisation) oddly makes more sense than in most books in the genre. Want to know why Mormons are more likely than most other religions to survive a zombie apocalypse? That information is right here, along with some other information like how to make a gun suppressor (the correct name for a silencer, apparently).

This book is addictive - the proof being that I went right on and bought the next in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth a read 16 Oct. 2013

I'm more of an Arthur C Clarke type of Science Fiction reader so this was my first foray into the Zombie type novel - glad that I did.
Storyline keeps you reading with the actual tale being told in the firstperson by a different character in each chapter - sounds cornu maybe but works in this case.

I thought I may have detected a little bit of Church of The LSD bias at times but nothing outrageous and, in fact, the book does provide a bit of an insight to the LSD for one who knows nothing about them.

Yup - 'me too' for the sequel - grab this freebie then pay for the follow up - worth every cent, penny, shekel whatever

5.0 out of 5 stars New breath into a popular genre 1 Oct. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I love the apocalypse/zombie kind of genre's and saw this as a freebie on the kindle book list. Such books all follow a similar story line where there is a breakout, the survivors fleeing and then how the adapt and survive in the new world.

What I have really enjoyed about this story is firstly, the use of the ET probe to initiate the outbreak and then include vampires as a higher secondary predator to the human race - superb!

Characters are believable with a lot of background to them and want them to survive together.

Great story and looking forward to further follow up novels if possible
