From the Author

Praise from other authors
I am thrilled that the paperback of A YEAR AND A DAY is everywhere you look and is doing so well. Bertrice Small said, "Virginia Henley writes the kind of book you simply can't stop reading. I was up till dawn devouring A YEAR AND A DAY." Chistina Skye said, "If you liked BRAVEHEART, you'll love A YEAR AND A DAY...No one sets fire to the page like Virginia Henley." Publishers Weekly said: "Steamy sex, memorable characters, bloody battles, nicely paced narrative." A couple of readers reviews said I used modern slang. "Cut to the chase" is an ancient hunting expression. In my previous book on Scotland, I used a lot of dialect and thick Scottish brogues which some readers found hard to read. This time, since both the hero and Robert Bruce were educated in England, I didn't use much dialect. I want to thank the readers for the success of this book. It is most gratifying!

By A Customer
I loved this book..what's with all these people complaining about the sex in this book...I started reading this book KNOWING there was going to be sex in it & was not at all suprised or offended by the sex scenes. This was my 1st Virginia Henley book and now I'm addicted. I'm reading Seduced now..I'm just on the 1st chapter so I can't commited on it yet. I hope it's as good as AYAAD! I'm addicted to Virginia Henley now! Good job Virginia!

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't Believe the Hype, 6 Feb 1999
By A Customer
I'm taking the time to review this book because I bought it based on the merits of the quotes plastered all over the cover of the paperback. I've never felt so cheated in my life. The characters were cliches who spoke 20th century dialog. Although the sex is described as "spicy," it was as crass as I've ever read outside bonafide pornography. I knew I was in trouble when the heroine turned out to be a red-haired Celt with "special powers," but I made myself finish the book. Even after the heroine dreams about an animal exciting her by licking her breasts. Even though the heroine was "empowered" and no one in the story seemed to realize what time period they inhabited. Even through the climactic breast-feeding scene (warning: no infant is involved). Right up until the end - which was the best part, not because it was good; just because it was finally over.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully-told story, 4 Jul 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: A Year and a Day (Hardcover)
This is a well-told story of Edward (I) Plantagenet's fight for, conquest of and loss of Scotland. It follows English lord Lynx de Warenne as he fights for his king and also befriends Robert Bruce, who is eventually crowned king of Scotland as Robert I. Lots of detail is provided about war campaigns, battles, treason and betrayal.

The story also includes a variety of passionate love scenes, including some that are playful, others that are just a bit crude, and still others that are loving and tender. I was extremely touched by the scenes in which Jane literally nurses her husband back to health after he is viciously attacked. I also enjoyed reading about Jane's special gift for communicating with animals and her brother's gift of second sight.

The story is humorous in spots, but it also contains quite graphic descriptions of the base deeds of many involved in the wars.

1.0 out of 5 stars TERRIBLE!
Why? Because the characters were shallow, one-dimensional, and had no chemistry. Besides, the way they "fall in love" is unbelievable. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit slow moving
The romance was lacking I feel she is trying to write books with more of an indepth story line rather than the usual banter between characters and romance.
