I am amazed to be the first person to review this amazing album. Althoug being an avid jazz listener and cd collector, I had not yet listened to any albums of Abdullah Ibrahim (fka Dollar Brand) until a few months ago, until I listened to one of his gorgeously lyrical signature songs "The Wedding" (which he has recorded several times in different formats on his own albums) on Larry Goldings' "Quartet" album. Then I decided that I had to get to know the composer better. In order to make a decision on which albums to start with, taking into account his huge recorded output, I browsed through the Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD to get a better idea on where to start. As a result, this was one of the first recordings I listened to. At first and subsequent listenings this proved to be a compelling and brilliant trio performance, recorded live at Sweet Basil in NYC in January 1995. With a great sense of dynamics and space, Mr Ibrahim knows how he can make the music breathe and give a lot of meaning to the notes, while keeping the momentum in the music. The flow of the music is also greatly helped by the almost seamless sequence of his own compositions. All I can say is, after also hearing at least another dozen recordings of his, that this represents for me his best piano trio performance and overall one of his very best recordings. Essential listening.

This recording captured the "liveness" of the performance. 5 Dec 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
After being present at Sweet Basils when this was recorded we were pleasantly surprised that the disk did capture the nuances of the performances. Evident is the spiritualness of Ibrahim's playing and an amazing cohesivess and communication of this trio. The sounds of live audience response (and some clattering dishes) added to the atmosphere of being at one of New York's legendary jazz hot spots. And do pay particular attention to the musicality exhibited by George Johnson, drummer - exceptional and sensitive - as was the bassist Marcus McLaurine. An exceptional evening and recording.

Intimate mastery 19 Oct 2007
By David J. Ohanlon - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Recorded live in 1995 at the Sweet Basil in NYC, this disc & performance captures a relaxed, masterful Ibrahim playing a collection of his most "popular" tunes with Marcus McLaurine on bass & George Johnson on drums. The whole set oozes quiet intimacy, with relaxed, subtle & intricate playing. The whole ensemble is excellent, both individually & collectively & Johnson's occasional skittering (yet never frantic) drum & cymbal work is a particular highlight. What partly makes Ibrahim essential listening is his ability to seamlessly integrate rhythms from his native Africa with western bebop traditions & Middle eastern modes. This helps explain why you can never predict exactly what chord or phrasing will follow the wonderful spaces he leaves in his playing. Highlights are the opener Nisa, the evergreeen Cherry Mannenburg & the closer Barakaat ('Blessings") although it's a pity African Marketplace is not played in full. Nevertheless, thoroughly recommended, particularly those wondering how best to start an Ibrahim collection.
