Book Description

This is western romance novella about two young people searching for happiness.

Josiah Moore is a twenty two year old man, whose wife died of diphtheria, leaving him with a two year old daughter. He is devastated and not knowing where to turn. Perfection is not good enough for him. He lashes out at everyone, swearing at them and belittling them. Several men leave their jobs as ranch hands. He even takes a swing at his foreman who has been on the ranch as long as anyone can remember. When the housekeeper who had helped his mother raise him chides him for his behavior and for ignoring his daughter, he angrily heads for town and a bottle. A cowboy prods him into a fight. Before Josiah can take a swing, he is in the sawdust on the floor, bleeding from his broken nose.

The town doctor, an old family gives him a hard time, telling him his late wife would be ashamed of him. He returned home, his nose stuffed with cotton and both eyes black, then sets out to make amends to all of those he has insulted or neglected. When Beulah told him he needed a wife, he decided to place an ad for a bride. He was given the address of Mrs Barnhurst and he began a dialog with her.

* * *

Anna Taylor is the eighteen year old daughter of a wealthy Plymouth, Massachusetts clothing merchant. Her father is seeking to expand his holdings and has negotiated a merger between his corporation and that of a middle aged mill owner. He has agreed to have his daughter marry the mill owner, a conniving, lecherous old man. Anna is adamant she will not marry the old man while her father is equally adamant she will do as he wishes, and that is to marry the man. Anna slipped out of the house and ultimately found herself in front of a newspaper office. On the public board outside the office she read about mail order brides and ventured into the office to inquire about them. Mrs Barnhurst has brokered the ads and met with Anna and decided to help her.

The book then takes them down their paths and bringing them together and finally marriage.

Almost impossible to read. Pages duplicated or missing. I feel like asking for a refund. Could have been a nice story.

3.0 out of 5 stars A 3 star. 30 Mar. 2014

I'm actually being nice to give it that much. When I read the sample, I was already having second thoughts, to bad I didn't have a third, I could have saved me some time. First I found the story was all over the place. It jumped pretty quick. And basically ran together, I felt Anna had no personality. For some one with a background with money she seemed to have no circle of friends. I felt that was pretty odd. Nothing was ever said why there was a shortage of young rich men. If the old man her pa wanted her to marry had children older than Anna why wasn't there a male heir? This story had to many wholes in it. Then you have Josiah acting like a petulant child after his wife Caroline dies. And he gets in a fight with every body... then has the snot beat out of him because he tells a whore to leave him alone. Really? To make matters worse. You suppose to have a little girl who is supposed to be 2. But talks and acts like a 5 year old? I think not.. And who feeds a supposed 2 year old jelly beans? Their teeth aren't fully developed. Big chance she would have choked. And a two year old isn't going to learn. A piano unless she is a child of prodigy. Give me a break. To make matters worse. There was no kind of connection between Anna and Josiah. Except in the very detailed bedroom. Like that could have been left out.She meets him and ready to bed him in one day? No let's get comfortable with each other. This book had so many things that were wrong. I could just keep going. The three star was. It had a cute ending. NOT a good ending just cute... I doubt I will read any more by this author. It is a waste of time. And one book that is the worst I have read in a long time....

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed 12 May 2014

I love mail to order bride books. With Yankee Mail Order Bride, I struggled to finish. I didn't know the characters that well. Anna and Josiah went from hello to having "the hottest" sex. Please. Really? Did the author remember what century she was writing? Would Anna really be that willing to be naked in front of a stranger? To have relations not even 12 hours after a long trip? I have so many problems with this story. I usually have to buy the next book, but I can't make my self to even try. Sorry I was disappointed. Wish I read the other reviews.

This was a little to much sex and I don't need it all spelled out for me. So I didn't like those parts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice story 18 Mar. 2014

I enjoyed the story of Anna and Josiah. Their story line kept my interest throughout the book. They had a developing love for each other with some sad ups and down in their lives. This in my opinion is the best mail order bride book that Susan Leigh Carlton has wrote. Her writing skills have improved so much with this book. I would recommend a nice read.

The story jumped constantly the characters were poorly developed. I tried to read the book until the conclusion, but it only became more apparent that it didnt get better just more of the same. I was very disappointed.
