Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Elegantly slim digital piano in Dark Alder cabinet with Graded Hammer Standard (GHS) keyboard and matte black keytops. The new cabinet design works equally well in both traditional and contemporary settings.

The 88 fully weighted graded hammer keyboard make this compact digital piano perfect for the beginner and professional alike. The beautiful Grand Piano sound comes from Yamaha's Advance wave Memory (AWM) sampling technoloy which creates sound close to that of a traditional piano. AWM Stereo Sampling creates a more spacious, deeper and richer sound by using a pair of waveforms (L and R) obtained via a stereo recording process.

The 2 headphone sockets are perfect for private practice and also enable 2 people to listen at the same time. The pedals work in just the same way as a quality traditional piano with soft, sostenuto and sustain feature

I bought the YDPS31 on a whim after being persuaded to get back into playing the piano after a long lay-off, and it hasn't disappointed.

The grand piano sounds and feel of the keyboard are fantastic - it obviously doesn't sound quite like a strung piano does, but it's nearly there. The key weighting is similar to a real grand piano in that the lower keys are weighted heavier than the higher ones, so "digital" sound aside, you'd think you were playing a strung piano if you closed your eyes.

There are no bossa nova rhythms or cheesy accompaniments - this product does just what it says on the tin. The only criticism I have is that two of the six presets are a bit naff - the pipe organ and harpsichord are pretty good, but steer clear of the 80s DX electric piano and slightly lame strings. Couldn't Yamaha have included a couple of nice Rhodes or Wurlitzer electric piano sounds instead?

The YDPS31 is very cool and minimalist-looking compared to some of Yamaha's digital pianos, which is a bonus. It's also compact which is useful if space is at a premium.

Overall, I'd highly recommend this to any serious piano player on a reasonably tight budget - I'm very glad I bought mine and look forward to many lost hours at the keyboard!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, affordable piano 8 Sep 2011

I bought this recently as an extra practice tool, so I can play in the evenings without disturbing anyone. It hasn't disappointed. The piano looks really classy, is easy to assemble (I managed to do it on my own, but the manual recommends using 2 people), and can also be easily taken apart again if you wanted to move it around.

The sounds are great for a digital piano at this price. There are two grand pianos, strings, harpsichord and organ. The piano and harpsichord are best, but the piano and strings combined also sound really good, especially when you add the reverb and hall effects.

I am using it as extra evening practice towards a music diploma, and I have to say it is fairly close to an acoustic sound, even if the keys can feel a little slippery. The pedals are good and I find the metronome and song record facility are great, particularly recording each hand seperately and then playing back using the other hand.
There is also a song library included with a music book containing all 50 pieces, so it's nice to be able to listen to them first and then have a go at trying to play them yourself.

I was really impressed with this model, for its price, compact and sleek design, and the digital effects included - would definitely recommend to both beginners and more experienced players like myself, and those wanting to save space with a more compact design. Yamaha have ticked all the boxes with this one.
