This keyboard is one of the best things I've ever bought ! And talk about value for money ... it certainly compares favourably with most other musical instruments, electric guitars and the like. Since it arrived, three months ago, it has been put to daily use by at least two of us and we are not even close to discovering all that it can do. I had looked at (and nearly bought) the Yamaha NP31 Portable Keyboard - Black and, if the intended user had been a child learning to play piano, it would have been a great choice. As it is, we are all adults with no previous experience and no expectations of becoming classical pianists, so we thought we might as well get something that would be more "fun" than just a piano. And fun it certainly is!

There are 497 voices - the vast majority are sampled instruments but some are actual sounds, like a clap of thunder, a dog's bark, a door slamming. My only complaint here is that the XG voices (Yamaha specific) are generally much lower in volume than the main instruments. EDIT: I have found a fix for this: if you turn off the "Touch" option, the voices are louder (how much depends on the voice). In any case, the "Touch" feature is only really applicable to the piano voices, so now I leave it off. Note that when you press the "Portable Grand" button, it automatically turns on the "Touch" feature.

The "Play with Style" function is really fun and it means anyone can sit down and mess around with the keyboard while a pre-selected accompaniment plays along.

This keyboard is a brilliant piece of kit (as you might expect from Yamaha) for a novice to intermediate player. I started as a complete beginner on keyboards and as it has so many voices, styles and songs to play with I just cannot keep away from it and have improved so much I have dared to let other people listen to me play - and they did not laugh too much (sic). I particularly love the recording feature so you can keep track of your progress. I see other reviewers have had problems finding the power adapter - which is included, you just have to look in the polystyrene packaging at one end!!!! As usual with Amazon, an extremely quick delivery. Overall immensely pleased with the whole process from ordering to receipt.

I've never played the keyboard before, but always had a passion for it. In short I love this thing. It's really well built and good quality. Just in case you were a beginner like me and you had no clue about keyboards then I'll tell you it's powered by an AC plug. You can enable and disable touch sensitivity on the keys. It has a little screen with a piano on it, so everytime you play a key it shows up on the little screen and also shows you which music note you are playing. It has built in songs. When you play the song each note played shows up on the little screen, so you can learn how to play the song. Unfortunately I was upset to know that a MIDI output USB cable is not included, but you can buy a decent one for about 5-10 pounds. Aside from that P&P were really good and I'm really happy to have bought it :D

Great purchase as long as your not a professional keyboard player. Lots of fun. I've just retired and this is the ideal thing to pass the time pleasurably. Good value for money. Downloading extra songs just a tad expensive. Overall great. P.S. Don't forget to buy a stand and cover.

First keyboard for our son as recomended by his piano teacher, technically probably more advanced then he needs now but will last good few levels and as it looks very serious and professional he really practices all the time as loves it so much.

Our kids got this last Christmas and it does everything they need and more, and is pretty amazing for the price.

There are as many voices as you could initially want (nearly 500) including all the standard ones you would expect and some fun/silly ones too (aeroplanes, dogs barking, laughter etc), but the voices and rhythms etc can be expanded further as far as I know by downloading them from Yamaha, and it having a USB slot on the back means you can easily connect it to your computer and use it with the like of Ableton, drum machines, etc without having to buy a midi adapter or similar.
There is a two track recorder too if you wish to do some recording on the device itself.

The default grand piano though is amazing ... really sounds authentic, and especially considering the price, the sound that comes out of this thing really is high quality.
The keys are full size and don't feel too plasticy like some cheaper ones do.

The teach yourself function is great too, around 100 songs to choose from and you can add more from Yamaha if you wish to ... my kids of 5 and 7 quite quickly taught themselves Fur Elise, using both left and right hands by simply following the lessons. They now have piano and music lessons and are progressing really well, but I don't think they will grow out of this for a long time to come.
Something else which is useful is the headphone jack ... means you can practise any time without disturbing the rest of the household (read: drive them nuts with the repetition or your mistakes).
