Worth considering 5 Dec 2010
ON THE PLUS SIDE:
The Keyboard is light and easy to use.

I bought this keyboard mainly for the piano and organ sounds and these are generally quite good.

A fair range of sampled real pianos, electric pianos including some Rhodes pianos and a few vintage Yamaha pianos. Organ sounds are good ,including some classic B3 settings, church organ, overdriven organ and a B3 with rotary leslie effect. The rotary organ effect is ok but you can't apply rotary settings separately to voices which is a shame. There are also GXlite sounds which give you more options on the pianos and organs etc.

Orchestral sounds are variable some good some not so good. Keyboard is graded action but not weighted so if you're looking for a weighted keyboard similar to a real piano look elsewhere. The keyboard is nice and easy to play.

There are various style options to play along with and you can tweek the sounds a bit with reverb and chorus. The overall sound of the instrument is good especially if you run it through good headphones or a decent amp and speakers - this will bring out a lot more depth in the sounds - the built in speakers are ok for practice but thats about it. It comes with power adaptor and a sustain pedal.

For a full spec on this instrument check the Yamaha website.

ON THE MINUS SIDE
As usual Yamaha have also included some dire guitar and other sounds many of which are useless and some of the synth sounds are very thin. The arpeggiator is nothing special, mainly presets and certainly not on a par with a decent synth or standalone arpeggiator but to be fair Yamaha don't advertise it as such. Build quality is ok and I'm sure it will prove reliable but I don't think the plastic casing would not stand up to regular gigging.

Only a few of the Strings settings are convincing - for serious recording of simulated/sampled orchestral instruments I would recommend software and a midi controller as the way to go.

Not Mac compatable - be warned. It seems to work basic DAW functions on a Mac via usb but that's about it. The led screen could be a bit bigger and expect to do a bit of scrolling for styles volume settings etc.

IN CONCLUSION
Overall a good keyboard for the money ( I paid [...] online) just don't expect a top stage piano for this money. For what I bought it for it does the job fine and is fun to play.

As somebody who wants to learn piano, I started out looking at proper weighted hammer action keyboards, but for that I'd have to spend about double what the NPV80 costs. I also wanted something with USB MIDI output for computer use, and many cheaper models don't give you that. Remember that many people criticising the 'feel' or 'action' of a keyboard are probably comparing the action with an £x,000 upright piano, which is silly. The NPV-80 has none of the horrible plasticky feel that my old M-Audio controller keyboard has, and feels very much like a piano. In fact, it's far more comfortable to play than the relatively heavy action of my mother's upright piano.

The NPV80 has far more features than I expected at the price. Most of then relate to it playing tacky in-built tunes and expecting you to play along, but it'll be years before I could ever come close to any of them. Ignoring all the cheese, there are some useful features. One is the 5-track recorder, which provides a mini workstation ability for getting basic ideas down. The USB output is of course very useful if you have a nearby computer to connect to. Everything about the keyboard is surprisingly cutomisable too, with a very extensive 'Function' menu. In combination with the nice backlit LCD screen, the big input dial is great for blasting through the sounds or choosing options, and if you can remember the voice you want you can just type its number on the numeric keypad. And perhaps importantly, the keyboard is very compact for a 76-note keyboard.

I was first considering a Yamaha DGX640C Digital Piano (which I tested in a music shop, right next to an NPV80!), but the '640 is an enormous ugly beast and any difference in keyboard actions simply does not justify its price. The NPV80 lets me sit down, turn on, and immediately play piano. Or connect it to the PC for a recording/sequencing session. It's a very good value all round keyboard and really cannot be criticised at the price.

I bought this for my daughter who is starting to learn the piano. I also looked at the cheaper Yamaha NP-30 piano. I played both before buying this one in a local music store. This model offers a lot more feature than the NP-30 for a relatively small increase in price. If all you want is Piano then the NP-30 will suffice but this keyboard does so much more.

For me the difference here is this keyboard has a full set of the standard Midi sounds plus a whole lot more. If you're new to keyboard what this means is you can download songs from the web as midi files, copy them to a usb stick which once plugged in will play back through the keyboard. You can also do basic recording of your own music on the device. This isn't a full music workstation (I own one of these but it's too expensive for the kids) but you can record a base part, chords and lead plus a rhythm section. Very nice for this kind of price.

The styles, in other words the automatic chords you play with the left hand while you lead with the right hand contain all the usual keyboard classics (i.e cheesy ones) but have some better modern ones which also have A and B variations you can switch between on the fly. This means each style has two flavours to allow you to have different feels for verse and chorus. Nobody in their right mind is going to ever perform using these styles but I was surprised how easy it made it to flesh out a tune I knew.

Build quality at this price is very good. For me yamaha have done a very good job of putting really useful features from much more expensive keyboards on an entry level keyboard at an affordable price. One other reviewed has mentioned that this keyboard doesn't have true midi ports on the back. This is correct. However, you can use PC sequencing packages via USB if you want to do that so it is a good controller keyboard in the application. The only time the lack of midi would become an issue would be if you wanted to connect it directly to a hardware sequencer (unlikely) or an external sound module (possibly). If this is the case, look elsewhere. For 90% of people, this is a winner.

The 80 version has some extra stuff above the 60 like being able to plug in a usb stick. I though the extra the 0 had on it was worth the small premium over the 60.
