Yamaha DGX-650 DGX-650

The DGX-650 is an outstanding instrument, featuring the classic sound, touch and response of a Yamaha piano. But that is only part of the story; it also has a huge range of additional features which make it a perfect choice for use in the home, studio, classroom or on stage. In fact, the DGX-650 is an incredibly versatile instrument that gives you so much more than just a digital piano.

The Sound and Touch of a Yamaha Piano

The piano sound you hear when you play the DGX-650 is that of a Yamaha concert grand piano just like those seen on stage in concert halls around the world. The sound of the piano has been digitally sampled and stored so that, for example, when you play a C on the DGX-650, you hear the C played on the grand piano.

DGX-650 whiteThe Pure CF Sound Engine recreates the detailed sound of a concert grand while the 88-note fully weighted Graded Hammer Standard (GHS) keyboard with adjustable Touch Sensitivity gives the player the feel and response of a traditional acoustic instrument.

The included footswitch controls the sustain (damper effect) or alternatively an optional three pedal unit (LP-7A) can be added to provide soft, sostenuto and sustain pedals. A high-quality built-in amplifier and speaker system complete a truly outstanding digital piano.

Compact and Portable

Thanks to its compact size, the DGX-650 is easy to transport and gives you a great piano sound wherever you’re performing. You can connect the instrument to an external amplifier/speaker system and use the built-in speakers as monitors which ensures you can hear your performance clearly.

The DGX-650 looks great in the home, the studio or on stage. There is a choice of black or white finishes and a matching stand is included.

DGX-650 screenFeatures for Students and Advanced Pianists

Along with all the usual digital piano functions, DGX-650 has a huge range of features to take your piano playing further.

There are 543 Voices in the instrument including pianos, orchestral, organ, synthesizer sounds and drum kits. Voices can be combined or the keyboard can be split to give a different voice on the left and right hand. The Portable Grand Button instantly resets the instrument to Piano only mode.

There are 195 Backing Styles programmed into the instrument which are great way to discover playing different types of music and to emulate performing with other musicians. The Style Recommender feature automatically finds matching backing styles based on the type of music you play.

DGX-650 outputThe Backlit Display shows a variety of useful information including voice and style selection, chords and music notation. Lyrics can also be shown when using suitable song files. The on-screen Chord Dictionary is useful for learning new chords quickly.

The Headphone Socket enables practice without disturbing others by using a pair of standard headphones (not included).

DGX-650 recorderRecording and Playback Features

In addition to a 6-track MIDI note recorder, you can also use the Audio Recorder to record audio tracks onto a USB stick (.wav format). This can then be transferred to a computer for sharing or storage. By transferring audio tracks from your computer on to a USB stick you can play them back on the instrument to use as an accompaniment to your performance.

ConnectivityDGX-650 connections

Using the USB-to-Host Port, you can connect DGX-650 to suitably equipped computers for use with a wide variety of music software applications. The optional Yamaha i-UX1 lead connects the DGX-650 directly to an iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch. Apps compatible with DGX-650 are available from the App Store.*

The USB-to-Device port on the front panel of the piano provides a connection to storage devices such as a USB memory stick. This can be used to store and transfer sound set-ups, song data and audio tracks.

The Audio Input Socket enables connection of MP3 players and other audio devices for playback through the instrument.

*Additional connecting leads, software, etc., may be required and are not included. Access to the App Store is required. Apps may be chargeable, please visit the App Store for more information.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm sold 16 Sep 2013
Colour Name:Black
The guy in the video should have his own schow! Aweshum!
I was going to purchase a P105 until I saw this. I believe it has just been released by Yamaha. Can't wait to use it more!
UPDATE after a couple of days:
This has exceeded all my expectations. I thought it would be good, but it is great. So much more than a piano (which it does really well).
I wanted a good beginners keyboard/piano (that I could move and didn't take up too much space) and as said previously, considered the P105. My brother has one and it is good. Great sound and keys with 14 (?) voices. The DGX650 has all that the P105 has and a lot more. Everyday, I keep finding new things to experiment with. I even downloaded a couple of "you are the artist" songs from the Yamaha website. Great for learning new songs. I think with all the extra voices and functions, it'll keep me interested for a long, long time.
Well worth the money IMHO.
Just for info, I'm quite techy but only reached my grade one piano (a few decades ago). I think this will be a great piano that the whole family can use, irrespective of their ability.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a piece of kit this is!! 8 April 2014
Colour Name:Black
Absolutely over the moon with this product.
We had a korg sp-200 which my daughter was learning on and I tried to teach myself as well.
She got to grade 1 and I felt her interest was waning so decided on an upgrade.
Did my homework online and knew from the start that the 650 was the one I wanted!
What a sound it has.
The grand piano sounds awesome and all of the other bells and whistles really make learning and playing a whole new experience for us, and my other kids are taking an interest as well,so a worthwhile purchase.
The best way to see this in action is on YouTube.
We got the black version, and the white looks stunning, but the black goes better with the rest of our furniture.
I am no musical expert but in my humble opinion I would thoroughly recommend this product.
Please note I am not affiliated to yamaha, or any music stores!
Just a satisfied consumer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what the Doctor ordered 25 Mar 2014
By Bill W
Colour Name:Black|Verified Purchase
I had started with keyboard lessons about 4 years ago and my music teacher persuaded me to actually play notes with my left hand rather than the follow the chord charts and I was hooked. Problem was she emigrated to Australia and my busy work schedule meant I couldn't find another teacher. So I put my music sheets and keyboard away for two years.

Enter the DGX 650, I got it after seeing several reviews on YouTube and okay they were experts and I was a novice but I was able to load the music I wanted using a music OCR to scan sheet music form some of my music books to MusicXML and then produced a MIDI file with some freeware software and voila I could load the music into the DGX 650 and have it tutor me with left hand only, right hand only and both. The great thing is I can learn to play anything I like rather than be forced into playing stuff found in off the shelf music tutorials books, Blue Danube move aside ( I really do like Blue Danube)

Ah then I discovered how to get the style recommender working following a Finger Bass style and some exotic harmony dual combination of galaxy and strings for the left style and I sounded like a JAZZ band awesome. This keyboard makes you sound ten times better than you really are and is really addictive to play.

I cant really compare it with what's in the market for this price point as I have always had a soft sport for Yamaha having owned several Casio's along the way, and I didn't look at any other manufacturer. All I can say is that the built in speakers are great and has various interfaces, USB, MIDI and oh you can even play along your MP3 or IPOD, whatever as the audio in gets piped through the keyboard/Pianos speakers.

In summary All I can say is that for the first time I look forward to my practice sessions and I can have my built in tutor help me along any hour I feel up to it.

Does everything you want, but mainly stays in grand piano mode! Peddles a bit noisy as spring loading too high. Display is a must.
