Having heard the CD S300 and been quite impressed I decided to do a bit of research online about both the CD S300 and its big brother, the CD S700. Sadly, there's not too much info and not too many reviews out there to shed much light on either product. The only high profile review of the CD S700 was WhatHiFi.com's where they gave it 3 stars. Interestingly, other Yamaha audio products in this range get rave reviews, particularly the A S500 amplifier.
Whilst the CD S300 seems to be selling online at close to its RRP the CD S700 can be had for under £300 which is a massive discount on its RRP. And its worth every penny.
Briefly, you get first class build quality - and at 6kg it weighs far more than your average budget CD player. You also get Yamaha's super-silent drawer mechanism which truly is a marvel to behold and nothing like I've seen before on this sort of price equipment. As for sound quality, amazing is the only way I can describe it. Great levels of detail and clarity with well-defined bass and perfect midrange, all presented in a wonderful soundstage. Unlike some CD players that seem to add a bit of the brand "house" sound of added bass or ultra-bright treble etc, this player seems the most natural I've heard for the money. Oh, I nearly forgot, you also get a USB input on the front for sticks and things. As for Cons I can't think of any, except there's no headphone socket. But then I've never used the ones on CD players anyway.
I've been listening to this player through A Rega Brio3 amp and MS Mezzo 2 speakers but I should think it'll sound great through cheaper or more expensive partners. Best bit of HiFi equipment I've ever bought.
