This is a great lock with a long chain which is ideal for our two new electric bikes. It locks without using the key and gives us confidence to leave our bikes in public. The alarm makes it better still.

I had previously bought a shackle-type lock alarm that proved to be complete rubbish so have been waiting for a better alternative and this looks to be it.

I like:
* Good thick but flexible plastic on the cable.
* You can snap the lock shut without the key.
* Option to set motion sensor or not is easy.
* Alarm goes off for 30 seconds then resets.
* Motion sensor does not go off too easily (more on this).
* Red led flashes every ten seconds when set (whether motion sensor activated or not).

I don't like:
* Unconvinced by the weatherproofing.

MOTION SENSOR
You set this with a little plastic spike you stick in a hole. They give you one on the keyring. For tuppence it's a shame they do not give you two but you can use a ballpoint pen too. It beeps to confirm. I thought this would be a bit of a pain but it only takes a second so actually it's a good option as there may be times when you don't want to use it - like a busy workplace rack where bikes get put close together.

I suspended the lock and let if swing from horizontal and it did not go off.
I caught it gently and it did not go off.
I caught it roughly and it went off.
I tapped it lightly with a screwdriver handle and it did not go off.
I tapped it briskly and it went off.

For me that is good. It will not go off when you are just picking it up to unlock (there's no delay on the alarm). But it will go off if people get rough. If it does go off inadvertently then you can cover the speaker with one palm while you unlock it and the noise is not too bad.

I presume the motion sensor uses the batteries more quickly but there is no info. I can't even find a tech spec on the Yale site.

The alarm isn't as loud as I'd hoped. When the lock is opened the electronics do not recognise this for a matter of minutes. The red light continues to flash as if the lock were closed until after a while the lock starts to beep in a seemingly random way that varies from a single beep to quite a few. The circuitry then seems to reset and will signal that the lock is active when it is reclosed. The movement sensor is far less sensitive than I had anticipated. I seem to recall that the packaging states that the movement sensor will go off if the case is attacked. Well I believe that. Certainly the lock can be moved about and not go off. The supplied keys are substantial. The cable is pleasantly flexible. The flashing red light is a very effective deterent. I've been using the lock for about a month and so far the batteries haven't gone flat. Changing the batteries involves undoing three self tapping screws! Thankfully this cannot be done with the lock closed. Having said all that I like the lock. One morning we found the back gate open and the bike cover thrown back. Admittedly this was only a secondary lock but I do think that it must have helped put someone off.
