Yakuza moon tells the life story of Shoko Tendo the daughter of a Yakuza crime boss from her early childhood to her adult years, this book describes how Shoko's father and his lifestyle seperated the family from a seemingly normal existence and had a huge bearing on the way Shoko choses to live her life, from early teen drug taking and violence through reform school and into a number of very abusive relationships with married men and serious drug addiction, the writer comes across as a beautiful caring person who is afflicted by tha Yakuza culture and chooses to rebel against this which leads her into a life of hurt that nobody should ever have to encounter. This book captivated and touched me and i could not put it down once i started reading it, it is particularly interesting to try and understand the relationships the writer has with her family and her lovers, this book is shocking and distressing at times but the reality is what leaves you hanging on for more, i would reccomend this book wholeheartedly

I'm not sorry I bought Yakuza Moon, although I do agree with the authoress at the end: it is poorly written. The writing doesn't flow, the characters were often underdeveloped and underused and her style is beyond stilted. However, this is an autobiography and I really do believe that every event in it is true and unembellished. In that respect, anyone interested in the journey of a girl who loses everything time and time again - indeed, up to almost losing her life - should give this a try. But don't come to this expecting great prose.

Often failing to engage the reader, often falling short of truly depicting the horror she has survived through, perhaps this is the metaphorical drug Shoko Tendo needs to kick before she can mature into a successful writer. So far, she hasn't quite gotten there.

My Wife's review:

I watched a programme on Nat Geo about the Yakuza and this is where I heard of Tendo and her book, and having just finished it, I have to say that I enjoyed it. I feel that some of the reviews on here are a little harsh in their criticism of Tendo's writing, I had absolutely no problem with how it was written, the only down side I can see is that it was a little short. The book is about her life growing up as the daughter of a Yakuza member, being bullied because of it at school, and then her going off the rails as she started to get a little older. I feel that she had a tough time growing up, some of which she brought about herself, however she does seem to have got things together now.

Overall I did enjoy this book and would recommend it.

Yakuza Moon, excellent book
Yakuza Moon is an extraordinary story. It is hard to think that it was real. Written in a very fresh and crude style. Memoirs of a Gangster's Daughter will change your mind. Read more

Japan viewed from the bottom
Tendo describes her violent youth and young adulthood in a stratum of Japanese society very far from the gentle and disciplined ones we are familiar with (true or not). Read more

Badly written book
This is a badly written book from start to finish, this woman hasn't achieved much in her life and there isn't really much to write about. Read more

Unexpected
I was not expecting such a seemingly honest an open account of Shoko Tendo's life. It must have taken her real courage to write this book. Read more

Superb.
Yakuza moon is one of all-time favourite books. Simply superb. I could not recommend this more, especially to people who already have an existing interest in Japan.
