5.0 out of 5 stars They come up LARGE 24 Nov 2010
By L. Goddard TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Verified Purchase
Just a word of warning about the sizing of these, having received a pair today.

They are advertised by the seller here as being Small, Medium, and so on, which is way too vague to be of much help. I'm a ladies' (UK) size 6, and guessed Large might be about right given that I'd want to put them on over chunky boots, and didn't want to have to fight to stretch them on. Turns out I should have ordered Small. Yes, SMALL! The ones I've received are way too big for me, even when worn with beefy size 7 hiking boots.

Here's the sizing info off the actual carton, so you don't make the same annoying and costly mistake I did. For clarity, I've converted them to UK sizes here.

Men: 4.5 - 8 (UK)
Women: 4 - 7.5 (UK)

Men: 8.5 - 10.5 (UK)
Women: 8 - 10 (UK)

Men: 11 - 13 (UK)
Women: 10.5 - 12.5 (UK)

Men: 13.5+ (UK)
Women: 13+ (UK)

The XL size has been made for a yeti, surely?

Clearly I'll not be using the pair I've received due to their extreme size, so I can't tell you whether they work on ice and snow, but they look to be well-made and quite stretchy. Certainly I'd consider getting another pair in Small. If I do, I'll report back on their effectiveness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jack and Jill come down the hill unbroken! 30 Nov 2010
By Lady Fancifull TOP 500 REVIEWER
I live on a road which is an East-West hill joining two North South hills, so whichever way I go there are cambers and ups and downs to negotiate. Last winter, buses couldn't get closer than 10 minutes (on a normal day) walk away.

This year, with the rosehips reaching a massive size by late summer my folkie tales heralded it would be a hard winter. So I ordered these in September, and they have just had their first outing today on the slippy, slushy street, with snow already becoming packed and a little icy

Oh the bliss of being able to walk at normal, fast pace, without clutching lampposts/hedges/stray pedestrians.

These are stunningly fit for purpose - though initially the sensation of a slight sideways roll (because you are no longer have your foot completely flat on the floor, but are on rolled sprung tubes) is odd.

Two warnings - the first, MOST helpfully provided by the first spotlighted reviewer is that sizings are ODD to say the least. Be aware that if you shoe-size is below a European 42.5 apparently. 7 1/2 (rather than the normal 8 1/2) you will need SMALL. And as they start at European 38 (5) that leaves anyone with petite and dainty feet still slipping around.

Clearly those Americans have big feet!

Secondly, they are quite a struggle to fit onto your shoes - particularly to chunky walking boots which are surely the best footwear if the pavements are snow packed. They are extremely hard/tight to stretch over - making you feel you clearly have bought the wrong size and should have had a larger. When done though, its obvious that the eyewateringly tight fit IS what makes it work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fab purchase 1 Dec 2010
Verified Purchase
These are brilliant, I can't rate them highly enough. I've broken two wrists and a knee in the past and have a serious phobia of falling as a result. However I have just walked about a mile and a half on seriously icy pavements without once feeling that I was in any danger of slipping. Even managed to hold my daughter up when she fell, I'm convinced that without these I would have gone over and broken something as well! I didn't need to have the straps on, they stay on well enough without, but I suppose if I was actually needing to run the straps would give a bit of extra security.

Not only is the product fantastic, but I ordered them on Tuesday evening and received them Wednesday lunchtime - great service Amazon, and free delivery too!

Twenty quid is nothing compared to the pain and inconvenience of a broken wrist, we've ordered pairs for family members as well and I've recommended them to no end of people.

5.0 out of 5 stars Secure walking at last 28 Nov 2010
Verified Purchase
Last year I could bearly walk up the woodland path to walk the dog - this year I can stride out with confidence. In fact, it is only when I see the difficulty other walkers are having that I realise how teacherous it is underfoot. I let the price put me off last year, but a couple of heavy falls made me reconsider.

3.0 out of 5 stars Poor durability but great performance 22 Dec 2010
I received the Yaktrax Pro last week, and have gone for three runs on roads/paths with a thing cover of snow and ice. Slipping has not been an issue at all on any of the 25 miles I have used them, but I am very disappointed in the fact that the metal springs have started falling apart.
The product does what it is supposed to do, but given the durability I think I will definitely test a different product before buying another Yaktrax Pro.

5.0 out of 5 stars An essential accessory for ice and snow. 20 Jan 2011
By E. Brightwell TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Size Name:Large|Verified Purchase
After the recent snow in December 2010 some streets in London and elsewhere in the South East were left coated in ice. Unless one has the appropriate alpine footwear to hand, walking on such surfaces carries a significant risk of injury as a result of a fall. There are many products available to put over normal boots, from quality crampons at over 45 a pair, to cheap rubber and plastic spikes. I have not tried them all, but having chosen the YakTrax Pro I believe that I have found a great value item which is easy to carry around as a precaution - with no sharp spikes to damage your bag - and which provides great traction on ice. The Pro version has a velcro strap and so does not need to be such a tight fit to be secure. It is therefore easy to put on and take off. This is important as these products are not really suitable for walking on in indoors.

The steel spirals are held in place by rubber cords. There is nothing else securing them, and there is no doubt that these will be the first element to wear out. I have seen reports that after running 50 miles or more with these on they can break. However, for the less energetic they should last for many years of normal use here in the South East. In any event, it is no problem if they do eventually break - all one has to do is secure the spirals in place with some copper wire instead of the rubber.

Over the last 20 years or so the South East has had exceptionally mild winters. I believe that we will now have a period of more normal winters with snow and ice every year. If so you will eventually need to buy this product or something similar, and so you may as well buy it now rather than when stocks are short and prices are hiked due to high demand.
