5.0 out of 5 stars A Dynamic Snapshot of mid 70's Jamaican Reggae 31 Dec 2000
Format:Audio CD
This 2 CD set is a sprawling roller coaster ride through vocal reggae, dub & toasting. It's probably the most complete snapshot of mid 70's Jamaica ever produced, managing to pack the production talents of King Tubby & Lee Scratch Perry alongside great DJs such as Tapper Zukie, Dillinger & Big Youth. Many of the songs on this collection appear in several formats, vocal, dub, toast & instrumental. It's also unusual as a rare example of Christian reggae, dealing with Jah through Christ rather than the more usual Rastafari route - hence the Jesus Dread title. All lovingly repackaged & remastered by Blood & Fire.

5.0 out of 5 stars Weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth... 11 April 2010
Format:Audio CD
Vivian Jackson aka Yabby You wrote the deepest and most hypnotic songs in the entire 70's Jamaican Roots Reggae scene. "Made everything else sound like The Osmonds", the liner notes quote! The atmosphere is made that much more apocalyptic when one considers his chief conceptual inspiration was The Book Of Revelation by St. John. Themes of Judgement and armageddon would be no stranger to reggae in the years following Yabby You's work, but they originated with him. He released a triumvirate of astounding LPs in the mid 70's, with "Conquering Lion" especially being particularly faultless.

This sprawling double-CD set testifies to the genius of the man's work. It is obsessively compiled, with the majority of vocal tracks followed by their dub or deejay counterpart. With up to three versions of the same rhythm back-to-back, the listening experience can be overwhelming. This is no problem if you want to listen to just the vocal tracks, or just the dubs - just remember to program your CD player first! Personally, I would have preferred a tracklist that separated the vocal tracks and dubs/deejay versions onto separate discs. The original release of "Walls Of Jerusalem" (aka "Chant Down Babylon Kingdom") had the six vocal tracks first, followed by their thunderous King Tubby dubs, yet here each vocal track segues into the dub comprising one single track! Annoying! Great for collectors, though. Pleasingly, this album does contain the entire "Conquering Lion" LP scattered throughout the first disc; which is excellent news considering the seemingly terminally out-of-print nature of that LP.

Jesus Dread 1972-1977 is a must have cd, At the time it was highly thought of as a positive way forward within the rasta movement as well as non rastas. A great cd for those into roots and culture reggae music.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you need convincing of life in Reggae beyond Marley... 19 April 2001

This music has the power to heal and change your life for the better! So righteous and beautiful I just can't get enough. I own well over 200 Reggae CDs and this one is now at the top of my list -- it has been growing on me exponentially since I got it. This is definitely music which requires repeated listenings for maximum enjoyment. Some of the best vocal harmonies in the history of Reggae, with fat grooves to match. Very hymn-like and churchical, with many outstanding dubs by King Tubby. Almost all the tracks were recorded at Scratch's Black Ark and voiced at Tubby's, with toasts from Big Youth, Trinity and Tappa Zukie. Also featuring a young Michael Rose on one track. The players are all top studio men, including Family Man, Sly Dunbar, Horsemouth Wallace, Chinna and many more. The liner notes are great with interviews and photos. All around one of the best examples of pure, righteous, Jamaican Reggae in existence. It will put joy in your heart and have you singing and bouncing all day long.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Roots experience 4 May 2005
By Trevor - Published on Amazon.com

Dark, haunting, uplifting, beautiful, conflicting....all these words apply to Yabby You's music. This box set is possibly the greatest release by the great Blood and Fire label. I have been listening to this release for years, and still find myself putting it on again and again. You get many different versions of the same song, but it is feels far from repetitive, instead you feel like you are getting closer and closer to the truth.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite records, period. 7 April 2006

I noticed there has been no 5-star praise for this album since 2005, so I want to add mine for 2006: I listen to this Double CD since 1998 - it is increadibly beautiful and never gets boring. I disagree with the reviewer who said this record is one that has to grow on you - I loved it the first time I heard it and I still do. I have bought this CD set since '98, gave it away to friends for birthdays and such, bought it again, and so forth. This album is easily among my top ten, not only for reggae. If you appreciate albums that have not a single lame song in them and that have timeless quality and are incredibly stunning works of art such as Talking Timbuktu by Ry Cooder and Ali Farka Toure, Rocking Time by Burning Spear, Welcome to Sky Valley by Kyuss or Clandestino by Manu Chao, you will love Jesus Dread.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely necessary double CD 29 Dec 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Because of the world's love affair with Bob Marley (one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, don't get me wrong) many reggae artists of the 70's get overlooked, and this is too bad, because Bob is but the tip of the iceberg! One of those overlooked despite being possessed of pure GENIUS is Yabby U. Yabby's message, riddims, and harmonies are divinely beautiful, and there is not a slow minute on this pack of originals, dubs, overdubs, toasts, and versions. Yabby U says he started singing because of divine inspiration; given what he's created, I don't know who can argue that he wasn't. --On a side note, in addition to the amazing tracks that will be in store for you on this, the liner notes are among the best I've ever read...just a thought. Prepare yourself for the power of Yabby U as he chants it down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blood and Fire Do it Again 29 Jan 2002

The Blood and Fire label is known as the reggae reissue label between the sound quality and selection you can't go wrong with anything on this label. This Yabby U LP is tied as my favorite Blood and Fire LP with Children of Jah. You want this LP.
