Telegraph review 20 Aug 2007
By tim
Format:Audio CD
On paper - or, better still, on video - Latin fusion posse Yerba Buena seem almost too good to be true: a bunch of kookily sexy, booty-bumping exhibitionists who throw everything Latin and New York (and quite a bit that isn't either) into one explosive hip-hop-funk mélange.

If their music feels slightly more ordinary on disc - and it is difficult to imagine anyone making this well-worn conjunction of elements feel particularly original at this point - then for sheer hyperactive energy this must still be the hottest record of the year so far.

Drawing on their first two albums, Follow Me packs in a quite preposterous diversity of elements - from ragga and old-school rumba to flamenco, free jazz and Balkan gipsy music - without disrupting its rowdily libidinous flow.

Yet it is as a live spectacle with the throwaway panache of a Latino Scissor Sisters that Yerba Buena seem likely to make the biggest impact

Tequila Sunrise 11 May 2009

It is surprising that something this much fun
could be both legal and freely available !

Music this infectious should carry a government health warning.

Senor Levin and his merry band of co-writers
and performers deliver 15 raucous tracks full of
spicy latin rhythm for hot summer days and nights.

Guest appearances are well judged and keep the project
rolling along in a wonderfully unpredictable way.

There really isn't a weak number in this collection.

'El Burrito' is a particular favorite. The shuffling
beat and Cucu Diamantes' ripe and juicy vocal performance
is an absolute hoot!

'Bilingual Girl', featuring the legendary Mr Bataan,
storms along. The horn section, here as elsewhere,
raise blisters in the mix. Very funny and very rude.

'La Gringa' is another highpoint. The machine-gun vocal
arrangement and alchemically tight rhythm section made
me laugh out loud for all the right reasons !

The hip hop (jip jop?) latin hybrid 'Sugardaddy', featuring
Mr Leguizamo and Ms Cruz on top form, is another cracker.

Mr Lynch's fruity trumpet solo on 'Solito Me Quede'
deserves a special mention of its own.

Ever eclectic, drum and bass even gets a look in on 'Fire'.

'Bla Bla Bla' has a whole bunch of fun at G.W.Bush's expense.
Oh Mr Herwig, what were you doing with that trombone ?!

In conclusion Mr Kuti's 'Gentleman' is given a right royal
uber-funky "live" treatment which must have set the mixing
console ablaze. Uplifting and inspiring.

Senor Levin is to be warmly congratulated for his efforts.

Very Highly Recommended.

Guardian 22 Jun 2007

Andres Levin is clever. Born in Venezuela but now based in the States, he's a producer, film composer and multi-instrumentalist (credited here with playing guitars, keyboards, tres, Wurlitzer and accordion, to say nothing of his vocals and horn arrangements) who has won accolades for his Fela Kuti tribute, Red Hot + Riot. Now comes his New York Latin/Gypsy project, a cheerful set that involves a remarkable list of guest stars, from Carlinhos Brown and Celia Cruz, to Orishas to Gogol Bordello (to say nothing of the samples from a certain GW Bush). It's a slick, jolly party album, and includes some great moments, from the rousing vocals of flamenco Gypsy star Diego el Cigala to the Middle Eastern workout on Bellydancer. But there's one stand-out track: Bilingual Girl ("Two tongues are better than one") deserves to be the Latin party hit of the summer.
