Review
Sheffield duo Slow Club shun romantic notions: they formed at school. Simple. They use random objects including chairs as percussion because random objects sometimes make a good sound. Also simple.
Simplicity is something Charles Watson and Rebecca Taylor clearly aren't afraid of: the backbone of their debut album is a range of uncomplicated ideas executed brilliantly and brazenly by a band of two. A layer of witty and often nonsensical lyrics, and improvised percussive embellishments add the differentiation. Lo and behold, Yeah So is immediately more than one could expect given its authors' unhelpful Nu-Folk tag.
Slow Club landed themselves the generic millstone through associations with the likes of Laura Marling and Tilly and the Wall, but the variety on offer here spans rockabilly on It Doesn't Have To Be Beautiful, garage during Giving Up On Love and even a bit of shoegaze with the aptly titled I Was Unconscious, So It Was A Dream.
Watson displays an adaptable attitude to his guitar, and so while Come On Youth is tremulous and climatic, the gentle picking on Trophy Room is evocative of the late summer scene mentioned in its lyrics.
Lyrical content is a key characteristic: single Because We're Dead makes little sense and refers to talking mice, while the second part of closer Our Most Brilliant Friends boasts the geniously comic line, ''The bones inside my shins are crumbling/ It's from all the crunking I've been doing''. Not often does a song offer the dual selling points of brilliant tune (which starts sounding something like an acoustic version of Springsteen's Dancing In The Dark) and a reason to have a satisfying belly laugh.
Cynics might see them as impossibly twee, but with their perceptive humour and self-awareness Slow Club prove they're not all surface and definitely not so silly. --Keira Burgess

Been following these two for about a year and recieved my 'signed' double cd this morning (ordered through Moshi Moshi)-its great!. I already have half the tracks from singles and ep's but the new tracks are just as good (theres also a couple of re-works of old stuff).I really can't rate this album highly enough and I hope they get the success they deserve.If I was to try to describe Yeah So? to someone its a mix of acoustic 'jaunty' folk with an indie twist (and a bucket full of harmonies)-think Simon and Garfunkel meets Pulp meets White Stripes.Buy,listen and enjoy

i love this. downloaded and been listening constantly. beautifully recorded with a wonderful honest production that is still revealing itself to me despite the lack of trickery, sometimes the best things are set so simply. the songs are brilliantly written and speak with a heartfelt voice. a nice mixture of joyful sounds and sad song subject. their voices are great and play off each other perfectly, the chemistry of their live show comes accross just fine.
i think this is an album im going to enjoy for a long while. highly recommended. dont be put off by reviews calling it twee, its as deep and punkrock as it is twee in its own sweet way

Whilst cynics will focus on Slow Club's infinitesimal level of twee and Charles's questionable ability to hold a tune, they would be wrong to do so. Beneath the sweet harmonies and fun folk on offer, there is more to be found. Album opener, `When I Go' is a touching tale about getting older and not wishing to do so alone that contains whistling and lyrics that flirt with cliché but ultimately land on the right side of the fence. That it does so curiously and thematically resembling the Beatles `When I'm 64' is pleasing, if not world beating.
`Giving Up On Love' see Slow Club plug in the acoustic and introduces the merest touch of garage-rock to comparatively rousing effect, and when `I Was Unconscious, It Was A Dream' breaks, it does so with a shoegaze-like drone. Even Radiohead's considered and wilfully artistic piano-driven plodder `Morning Bell' from the Amnesiac album is brought to mind on `There Is No Good Way To Say I'm Leaving You'. However, it is on the fourth track when Slow Club start to become most at ease entering Rilo Kiley country, in both its senses, to showcase a wildly infectious and simple pop-folk number to recall Emmy The Great's commendable work earlier this year. This alt-country feels is reprised on the enviably finger-plucked `Trophy Room' made entirely their own with a generous serving of original percussion. A harsh review could say that whilst their preceding EP was excellent, newer tracks either recall those verbatim, or are less substantial in comparison. This shows in that Yeah, So's highlight still comes from that EP. That said, `Dance `Til The Morning Light' would be a credit to any singer-songwriter, a poignant and truthful track charting the ever-popular and inspirational love and loss. It would be a harsh review indeed then to cite indifference towards Yeah, So, despite that title's apparent push in that direction.
