This is a great product, but the support clearly leaves something to be desired. But let me take things in order.

First of all if you plan on buying a Y-cam make sure you buy the current model. This is a YCK004, and there are plenty of YCK003, a superseded model, on offer. Some at higher prices, some lower. I really suggest you go for the current version. This is true not only of the YCK but the other models they sell.

Second, when you receive it, and it is extremely nicely packaged, I would strongly suggest you plan on installing it using Internet Explorer. I am a Google Chrome user and this made for a very difficult time. In the end I realised that my problems were caused by Y-cam's lack of recognition of Chrome, and resurrected an Explorer window just for this installation and subsequent control of the camera. If you go the Explorer route, basic installation of the camera with a wireless connection to your own router is simple, with the default installation path normally doing the work for you. I have no experience about installing it with a Apple Mac. The documentation appears to be more mindful of Apple than Google though.

Once you have the camera up and running it presents a good picture in light and dark with a sound stream. This is easy to access from Explorer, Chrome, and I suspect all the other common OS. The colour is slightly distorted, but they put a note to say this is the case and that it is a compromise to enable the camera to operate successfully in the dark also. I have to say the night time picture is very good.

You will probably want to be able to access your camera from any PC anywhere. Since this is a function of your router, not the camera, I will not go into that here except there are good instructions as to how to go about this. It can seem complicated though, so if you are not comfortable with computers you might want one of your more technical friends lined up to help with this bit.

The motion sensing works well, and I get an email each time someone enters our back door, which is what I wanted.

Support is a different matter. Because of my initial difficulties with trying to set the camera up using Chrome, I did send an email, in fact two emails, to Y-cam's support organisation. I was given ticket numbers by an automated system, but close to two working days later I have heard nothing more back from them. Hence the 4 not 5 stars.

Now I have it working I am delighted with the product, but you will need to stand on your own two feet. If you use Explorer, it should not be too difficult.

Super little camera 4 July 2011

A great piece of kit. We have been using it to keep an eye on what our new puppy gets up to when she is left alone overnight or when we go out. The motion detection recording is perfect for this. The infrared night vision is simply great for this. I use it with a QNAP NAS which you can use to record the video data on without needing to leave your PC on all the time. Also there is an iphone app to let you view the live image.

Bought two of those of the Y-cam store directly,
The build is good/ok BUT the WIFI range is VERY poor.
Only works for me with LAN cables which defeats the object.

Also needed to fork out for a Wireless range extender (with LAN plug) so not happy.

Great for the price
Seems to do exactly what it says on the tin for the right price. Not the highest quality ever but you'll pay more than twice the £ for anything better. Read more

Y-Cam on the farm
It was easy to set up, has an excellent picture as good as a camera of the same size. We have used it to watch a pair of Blue Tits build a nest and rear a brood of 10 chicks. Read more

Work great, but its not the easiest thing to set up
Its the "viewing your camera from the internet" bit that I found slightly tricky. Before you do anything with the thing, go online and install the latest firmware! Read more
