When these extractor fans need replacing after failure, the problem is that the fixings cannot be directly reused because the manufacturer changed the design. It means that screw holes and clamps don't align up, and a trivial job becomes a task of inconvenience.

I am glad to say that this new version of the GXC6 will replace the same model installed 20+ years ago with the brown painted metal baseplate, made by GEC. The main differences are:

1. The fixing holes are different, so you will need to re-drill two new holes.
2. The pull chord exits from the bottom left hand side of the front cover.
3. The outside grille has two screw fixings for rawlplugs and has no baseplate.
4. The wire entry is located top-right of the front cover.
5. The design is made more of injection moulded plastic - two snap-lock tabs
now retain the front cover.

If your installation used the worm-screw retaining straps (like an uncoiled jubilee clip), then you can reuse these. However, they are positioned differently. The kit includes the short straps intended for installation in a glass window.

The fan seems to operate to about the same noise level and performance. There are accessory options for timers and humidity switches.

We would have liked more detail. It implied it was for wall or window fixing but did not have the wall mounting stuff, its a separate item evidently. We did get round it but it caused a problem. Fan itself is fine.

this was a replacement for a much earlier model (1986) - it was easy to fit by following instructions. The unit is very quiet and very efficient in removing stale air and cooking smells from our very big kitchen

The fan is great but the problem is it comes without a wall kit and I have had some trouble locating one. Why can't it be sold at the same time ?

Purchased this item because we used to get a lot of steam in our kitchen when cooking and had to have the windows open regardless of the weather. Since fitting the Xpelair fan we do not have that problem any more which is great now the winter is here. Would recommend this item to anyone who is having the same problem.

My old Xodus model is in use in a hot seaside climate for occasional holiday use. The plastic parts had gone brittle over time, the steel spring clip holding the thermo actuator for the louvres had corroded, the plastic fan carrier supports had cracked and the plastic locating tabs for the front cover had become brittle, cracked and broken. The arrangement for securing the louvre cover was not reliable and the cover kept getting pushed away by the thermal actuator keeping the louvres closed. In just over 10 years, the fan had very little running hours, the thermal actuator never failed, but most of the plastic parts fell apart. I designed out all these problems, but decided to buy the GX6 as a replacement or backup.

So what is different about this GX6 model? First thing is if you are replacing the old Xodus it has the same BIG duct hole for what is a 6 inch fan - about 185mm diameter. This new model is to all purposes compatible with your existing hole or metal sleeve if fitted in a wall like mine. One review reported the backdraught shutter let through a lot of wind. Well as far as I can tell, they use the same principle with a strong spring holding the shutters closed. There is a new feature on this model to allow trickle ventilation by part opening the louvres and I suspect criticism of wind leakage comes from not realising the trickle vent position was set open.

The 30 watt motor does not look much different, but somehow the plastic motor supports seem shorter and chunkier and there is an overall reduction in the outside measurements. My Xodus fan was fitted high and needed 10mm of plaster cut away into the ceiling, but this new model appears to have shrunk in overall size, but still uses the same size duct.

Bought as replacement for the 1980 fan, regretted, the old one was better. Old fan had a lot of aluminum parts and was much more rigid, this one totally plastic. The shutter planks are very thin and do not close sufficiently firmly to stop the air from outside coming in. Any strong wind and it gets very cold in my kitchen once I put that in. So main complain - drafts, had to stick a plastic bag on to it as a temporary measure before it gets warmer outside. Nothing to do with partly opened shutters. Avoid if you can.
