5.0 out of 5 stars A definitive guide to what makes the Welsh tick, 15 Mar 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Xenophobe's Guide to the Welsh: The Xenophobe's Guides Series (Xenophobe's Guides) (Paperback)
The Welsh, like the Scots, share Britain with the English and get very annoyed when they are lumped in with "England". The prickly and sometimes violent relationship between the Principality and its large neighbour has shaped both nations, but especially Wales. It has also led to the grwoth of a lot of sterotypes about the Welsdh as held and purveyed by the English, most of them unflattering. This book looks in an informative and entertaining way at what makes the Wlesh different, what makes them tick, and what makes them special. As someone with ancestral roots in Wales, family connections, and a fairly frequent visitor I found it well worth reading and very true to life.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's not all singing in the hillsides !, 29 Aug 2003
This review is from: The Xenophobe's Guide to the Welsh: The Xenophobe's Guides Series (Xenophobe's Guides) (Paperback)
As an Englishman, dismissing the Welsh with jokes about sheep, beer, mining and rugby, comes as second nature. This book achieves the mini-miracle of convincing the reader that, while there may be a fair bit of truth in these prejudices, there is more to it than that, and that the Welsh are different, not just an addition to England. I expected to be at best slightly amused, but came away with fresh knowledge, and (briefly !) sympathetic to the subject matter, which surprised me !

The author covers the unpromising subject with humour, learning and passion - but then, he is Welsh !! It would certainly be interesting to read a revised edition, to see how the author views the new constitutional arrangements for Wales, and to give him the chance to update and correct the rugby section, wherein lie the only inaccuracies of the book, to reflect the current sorry predicament of the Welsh game !!

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good, 9 Mar 2005
This review is from: The Xenophobe's Guide to the Welsh: The Xenophobe's Guides Series (Xenophobe's Guides) (Paperback)
This is the first Xenophobe's guide I've read and it was a very pleasant surprise. Surprisingly good, generally accurate, often funny and without much of the bile that often characterises discussions of the Welsh.

Having been born and raised in Wales, I think that the author rather underplays the enmity between North and South but he compensates in other areas, including a very good definition of Gwald (usually and inadequately translated as country).
