Defend the Spanish from foreign assumptions,
By
This review is from: The Xenophobe's Guide to the Spanish: The Xenophobe's Guides Series (Xenophobe's Guides) (Paperback)
This is one of the weakest of the series. The author seems to be intent on correcting foreign assumptions, rather than putting forward the funny incongruities. Most of the books are written with much pride and appreciation of the land the authors have often adopted, but they also see the funny side. This book maintains that the Spanish have a good reason for everything, which is that they wish to have fun and when it's not fun they ignore it. It's not really the job of these books to correct the funny things we've noticed about the Spanish but rather to add to the sum of them!
For very funny and well-written editions, with all the facts at the fingertips and the humour to pull off the punch lines, see those on the English, the Swiss, the French and the Italians, for instance.

humorous explanations for the Spanish way of life,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Xenophobe's Guide to the Spanish: The Xenophobe's Guides Series (Xenophobe's Guides) (Paperback)
I have read many of the 'Xenophobe's guides' and this one, once again hits the mark, spot on! I have several Spanish friends and have lived in Spain for several months and this book reminded me of many of the funny incidents I've had with the Spanish. Without going into excessive detail and in a very humorous way, the book gives you so much information about the real nature of the people and the country. I couldn't put the little book down and read it in a matter of hours. I find myself dipping into it now and again just to remind me of the Spanish way.

collection of mistaken clichés,
By EVF (Spain) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Xenophobe's Guide to the Spanish: The Xenophobe's Guides Series (Xenophobe's Guides) (Paperback)
The main reason why most books about the Spaniards are totally wrong is because they ignore the fact that Spain is composed of different cultures, folkores, languages, weathers and people. People from Galicia have nothing to do with Catalonian or with Andalusian people. The problem is that the Andalusian clichés have always been applied to all Spaniards, which is absolutely mistaken. We are a diverse country; Foreigners travelling to the north (Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, the Basque Country, etc) for the first time will discover "new Spains" totally ignored by the maintream stereotypes.
