CD Description

Pianist Aki Takahashi s follows up her acclaimed first disc of Xenakis piano works (which won a Diapason d or in France, MOD-CD-80) with this second volume this time works for piano with instruments. She is joined by an all-star cast of players: Rohan de Saram (formerly of the Arditti Quartet), The JACK Quartet, and the Callithumpian Consort conducted by Stephen Drury. All works are underrepresented in current recordings or difficult to find at all. Includes the first new recording in over 10 years of Xenakis landmark EONTA (1963) for piano, 2 trumpets & 3 trombones a blistering work which rates among the most difficult solo piano pieces ever written. Unique effects include requiring the brass players to move about the stage for spatialised effects, and to point the bells of the brass instruments into the piano and play to create resonance. AKEA (1986), written for Claude Helffer and the Arditti Quartet, is not a typical addition to the romantic tradition of the piano quintet. It signaled the beginning of a more inward, reflective phase of Xenakis output MORISIMA/AMORSIMA, was composed with the aid of a computer in 1962. This is the only readily available recording. PAILLE IN THE WIND (1992) for piano & cello performed with Rohan de Saram. This is the only available recording.

Superb performances and recording 25 July 2010

This recent release on Mode continues their excellent series of Xenakis' music. I particularly like these new recordings of Eonta and Morsima-Amorsima. According to the CD this program is also available on surround DVD but I've not seen this version available on Amazon as of this writing. I'm grateful and happy that Mode is maintaining such a high standard of excellence in these releases of Xenakis. As the earlier review here noted; this release is not HDCD nor is there any indication on the CD that this is the case.

Xenakis & Aki Vol. 2: 10/10 Absolutely Perfect! 9 May 2012
By 21st Century Reviews - Published on Amazon.com

At first I rolled my eyes at this latest Mode release, seeing we only have about 3 minutes of actual NEW Xenakis to hear in 'Paille in the Wind'. I mean, so much needs to be recorded, like 'Zythos'; and, another recording of 'Eonta'?

Well, like a dutiful slave, I snapped it up, and, wow, this disc is just spectacular in sound and performance. 'Eonta' is fairly transcendent here, beautifully done with lots of unique touches that make it the only real choice for this piece. Compared with the other Mode version, this one is 4 minutes longer, but I don't know who's doing what. This version is now The One.

The piano quintet 'Akea' is here given a remarkably wonderful reading, with a perfectly clinical recording that makes me feel like this may be the best Xenakis recording ever. Everything here says cool detachment, and it's beyond words.

This is certainly a demonstration disc. Mode's series goes now from strength to strength, but, alas, we haven't had a new release in two years. Give Brian a call and let him know your concern!

Great recording but NOT HDCD! 1 July 2010

This is an excellent recording: Brilliant musicians and compositions, especially track 2. However, I had to subtract on star due to false advertising. It is NOT encoded for HDCD. My Rotel does not pick it up. Nonetheless, it is worth purchasing for the splendid recording at high bit processing and fine music.
