Amazon.co.uk Review

Xena--you gotta love her: after all, she could snap your neck just by straightening her knees. She sprang fully armed from Sam Raimi's head in March 1995, to flesh out an otherwise routine episode of the television series Hercules, a 5' 10" high-kicking, horse-riding, chakram-throwing ancient-Greek-warrior princess, who mustered armies the way some women shop for shoes, turning heroes against one another as gleefully as she laid waste to sweet little villages.

Except that somewhere beneath that straight dark fringe and hard-boiled leather breastplate lurk doubts, feelings, even a soul. She was so popular on Hercules her spin-off was an instant certainty--and pretty soon the subtext of her own series was unfolding. Xena is on journey from evil to good, but this can only be enabled via the companionship of bossy redhead scribe/bard Gabrielle, her constant companion. Set in a lush New Zealand doubling for the pagan Mediterranean, as misruled by Ares, Aphrodite, Poseidon and the rest of the Mount Olympus gang, Xena: Warrior Princess recounts these exploits, as the duo confront gods, monsters, warlords, idiots and anachronisms, as well as their own flaws and desires, at the hilarious and sometimes unsettling mythological cross-roads where touchy-feelly Californian feminism meets high-camp chop-socky pantheism seasoned with the Way of Peplum Tao. --Honey Glass

In the first series (first aired US 1995-96), Xena and Gabrielle encounter Centaurs, Amazons, Titans, Gods, Helen of Troy, Hercules, King of Thieves (and Zappa-lookalike) Autolycus, and--most important and exciting--Xena's ex-victim-turned-nemesis Callisto, an evil skinny-blonde avenging angel. --Honey Glass

The first half of series 2 of Xena in this box set is really excellent. I hadnt seen any of the 11 episodes featured on these tapes, and I wasnt dissapointed. All the episodes are great, but in my opinion the best episodes were - remember nothing, return of callisto, girls just wanna have fun, the xena scrolls and here she comes.... . This box set is a bargain, and I would advise any xena fan to buy it, especially if you have never seen the episodes before. This box set is quite a treat for those fans who like the xena episodes to contain alot of comedy and action, rather that dark and drama.

Once again, Xena and Gabrielle prove to be at the centre of history's making. In 'Cradle Of Hope' the pair discover an abandoned babe in a Moses basket(!) and encounter Pandora (the keeper of the infamous box) whilst attempting to steer an easily influenced king away from an infant massacre. Meanwhile in 'Dreamworker' Xena must confront her dark side to save Gabrielle's innocence.

2 excellent episodes which help to define the bond between the two characters.

Season 2 of Xena was the first to have full-blown episodes totally committed to comedy, so this box set ends up being a great showcase of the comedic talents of the shows 2 leading ladies, as well as retaining the action and adventure of the first season.

With multi-episode arcs and great characterization and superb acting, you could far far worse than spend your money on these 11 episodes.
