From the mysterious and breathless beauty of "Magic", to the sparkling incandescence of "Xanadu", this album should have defined the direction for 80s pop music. The film flopped (although is now a cult favourite), but the album was a huge success. ONJ notched up two Number One hits ("Magic" in the US, and "Xanadu" in the UK), and other hits include "Suddenly" (ONJ and Cliff Richard), "I'm Alive" and "All Over The World" (both Electric Light Orchestra). Buy it, sit back, enjoy - and be transported to a place of great beauty and magic....

The movie is not awful - it just lacks a really good story - the story itself is a good idea and was based on another film made years ago. So this is a remake. This is a musical fantasy and that is what the songs and the movie are about. To me it was a collecton of great music videos connected loosely by a story. Olivia looks great and the soundtrack is fantastic and spawned hits such as Xanadu, magic, I'm alive, don't walk away, all over the world - the other tracks are great like Suspended in time and the fall. 6 tracks featuring Olivia and 5 featuring ELO.

it is time the soundtrack was remastered and also the bonus tracks were added like "fool country", "you made me love you" "drum dreams" the B sides to the singles and also remixes of "Xanadu". The album could also do with new sleeve notes and pictures along with the lyrics too

Originally released in 1980 on LP and Cassette but reissued on CD from Europe, Australia and Japan.

Follow up film soundtrack after Grease in 1980: it got panned by the critics as a film but as a movie soundtrack charted highly in the UK album charts.

ONJ sings on 6 out of the 10 songs on this album - one with ELO. 5 songs written by John Farrar (ex-Shadows/MW&F) and 5 by Jeff Lynne (ex-ELO).

ONJ fans are still waiting for a remastered/expanded/deluxed version on this CD album with at least 2 more (see DVD of film) ONJ songs written by Farrar - You made me love you and Fool/Country plus any film leftovers eg instrus.

Full disclosure here: I'm writing this review because of my interest in The Electric Light Orchestra and have to admit that I feel utterly indifferent to Olivia Newton-John's music; it is not something that has ever interested nor offended me (although I do think “Physical” is rather awful). Honestly, I am not writing these words to upset fans of the film or of Olivia, Cliff or anyone else to do with the project. Sadly, I do think it's a shame that Jeff Lynne and the Electric Light Orchestra had anything to do with the 1980 film “Xanadu”, such was the negative critical response. It was named amongst the worst films of the year by critics and was even an inspiration for the Golden Raspberry Awards, formed specifically to 'honour' bad motion pictures. However, the silver lining to this cloud is the handful of excellent Lynne-penned songs which appear in the film and, subsequently, on the soundtrack. Being completely objective, I can't say that there is much on side one of the album to interest me and the fact that ELO share a soundtrack with Cliff Richard is one that causes an uncomfortable shifting in my seat. Unfortunately, these songs comprise half of the record, so it would be wrong to ignore them and just pretend they weren't there... as much as I would like to.

Each of the five songs on the first half of the album are written by John Farrar, a successful songwriter and long-time collaborator with Olivia Newton-John (he wrote “Have You Never Been Mellow”, as well as “Hopelessly Devoted To You” and “You're The One That I Want” on the “Grease” soundtrack), so his track record is impressive.

This is a srange yet interesting idea of a soundtrck album. Not only does it feature Olivia Newton John as lead vocalist throughout the album,as she appears in most of the songs on it anyway, but its a strange cocktail of a mix.We have the big band styling on songs like Whenever your Away From Me which features ONJ and Gene Kelly on vocals but theres also The Tubes as well sharing vocals with ONJ on Dance with You, and Cliff Richard helps out on the "Suddenly" which a decent song all the same.Other tracks include Xanadu with the ELO.Dont walk away, and "Im alive" too,as well as "All Over The World" all from ELO. IF you havent seen the movie its hard to see how the songs fit in. If your unsure of this see the movie first. Alternativley if your a great fan of both Olivia Newton john, and The Electric Light Orchestra youd buy it anyway. As i say ,its intresting nonetheless.

Well at least the ELO side. Some of the best ballads from Mr. Lynne. Turn up 'Don't Walk Away' to the max and squeeze every last drop out of that faded guitar solo.
