Product Description

Review

"John Man's engaging and diverting study of the historical Xanadu renders the truths as beguiling as the mythology . . . with a combination of travel writing, historical analysis and anecdote, Man uses Xanadu almost as a keyhole through which to describe larger events." "--Scotland on Sunday"

Book Description

The respected historian and travel writer, John Man, tells the remarkable story of the world's most famous traveller - Marco Polo - and the moment when East met West for the first time.

xanadu 23 Dec 2009
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This well written and researched book isbasically an analysis, interpretation and discussion of Marco Polos book "Description of the World" of which there are 150+ veersions. Polos book was written in the late 1290s by a cellmate while he was in prison. It finally saw the light of day in 1299 when he was released and it had a massive impact on society.
Marco was not the first to visit Xanadu the base of Kubali Khan -his father and uncle got there in 1266 as did other travellers in the 1250s but Marco was the first to write about it.
Marco Polos account is the story of a 24 year journeey from 1271-1295 but it is vague, inaccurate and contradictory in places and subject to variation depending on which version is examined.
The author makes a good effort to unravel all this and in the process make a most readable book.
the pictures are good but the map-pages 28-29 is hopeless.

If you want to learn the truth behind historical events in an entertaining and factual ways then you really can't do better than John Man. A character within the historical world who believes in practical archaeology over guesswork. Entertaining, beautifully written and described in such a way that you can just remember a lot of the information quite easily, it was a real joy to experience the world of Marco Polo in the 21st Century. Definitely a book that will keep your own historians happy and perhaps one that could lead to your own holiday expedition.

Wonderful 10 Jan 2012
By Lars
Format:Paperback
A masterly written book of history in the guise of a novel. It brings the origin of China to life and keeps you glued to the pages.
