BBC Review

Critics say that rock music is only any good if it's about the personal pain of the musician. But Status Quo don't want you to feel their pain. They want you to bang your head, jump up and down and have a good time. For providing this simple pleasure they have been ridiculed by journalists and loved by large swathes of the British public for over thirty years.

Listen to "Gerdundula". This is an English folk song. Play it on a fiddle and stick your finger in your ear and it would pass in any folk club in the country. Considered as a selection of jigs and reels tracks like "Down, Down", "Caroline" and (my favourite) "Mystery Song" make perfect sense: loud, electric folk music for dancing.

The best stuff is from the early seventies, when the murky, basic production and tight rhythm section set up a selection of exciting guitar thrashes. "Softer Ride" stretches one blues chord out for two minutes. It's simple, and clever. If AC/DC did it, everyone would applaud.

Later they start to rely on covers for those all important hit singles. "Rockin' All Over The World" is great. "The Wanderer" is awful. Similarly when they try to expand their range the results are mixed. "Margarita Time" is daft but charming, but "In The Army Now" is horrible. It shows that the Quo should never try to be serious. And "The Anniversary Waltz" is ghastly cabaret.

Two CDs are far too much for anyone but a fan. But the Quo are a classic people's band. Like Oasis, only faster. Like the Ramones without the blocked nose and New Jersey accent. And if Fairport Convention are folk rock, why aren't Status Quo?

Switch off your brain. Enjoy yourself. Lose yourself in the crowd. All together now: "Again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again..." --Nick Reynolds

Album Description

Spanning almost 40 years of making hit records, XS All Areas--The Greatest Hits covers the history of Status Quo from psychedelic beginnings through to rock legends. The album features 23 of their 37 top 20 singles (more than any other UK group), two brand new tracks ("You'll Come 'Round" and "Thinking Of You") and fan favourites (such as "4500 times").

This is a great collection of the best work of the world's greatest hard rock boogie band. In a world full of rock and pop, it's great to still have a group that know how to rock AND roll!
XS All Areas has all the hits: 'Caroline', 'Whatever You Want', 'Down Down', 'Rockin' All Over The World' etc., as well as the fans favourites like 'Forty-Five Hundred Times' and 'Anniversary Waltz'.
This is fantastic, the ultimate Saturday night record, a collection of songs that'll have you up and dancing by the end of 'Caroline' easily!

I have actually listened to this album and find that it is probably the best Quo collection currently available. Anyone who cannot tell the difference between Quo songs is caught up in one of the unfairest cliches in Rock. Quo have more than 3 chords (there I've said it, and if you listen to '4500 Times' its not difficult to prove that the lads can actually play beyond the legendary 3 chords). There is a load of classic Quo here from their days when they were as powerful a draw as Purple, Heep, Rory Gallagher, Nazareth, Alex Harvey, Family, Thin Lizzy, Budgie etc. This double disc set is great value for money - the tracks sound fresh and I defy anyone to sit and listen to this without tapping their toes or indulging in a spot of air guitar. Pure entertainment!

As a Quo fan for over 30 years it's now getting to the stage when Quo can release a best of their greates hits albums, so often has their back catalogue been rehashed. As it goes thisis probably one of the better releases and does cover both singles and favourite live tracks such as 4500 Times and Big Fat Mamma. However, it has to be said that the late 80's and 90's were not a good period for the band and most of the stuff from this period is poor. When placed side by side with the earlier material the cracks begin to show. If you want a far better collection which represents the best of the albums and singles then try the three disc "Essential" series. This is a far wider range and really highlights just what made quo so important in the early years and just why they dominated British rock for virtually the whole of the 70's and early 80's. As a taster for the tour later this year "X'ess all areas" is OK, but please NO MORE BEST OF's & COVERS ALBUMS.. enough already!!!!!!

Not bad for a heads down boogie !
Some great tracks, some good tracks and some pretty boring tracks. A reasonable overall picture of the band and a good progression of tracks through the "ages". Read more
