More About the Author

Tom was born in 1975 in Saint Louis Missouri and has worked at Microsoft for over a decade. He specializes in bringing together managed code and gaming. He wrote and supported Managed DirectX and was largely responsible for implementing the XNA Framework. He currently works in Microsoft Studios making games.

About the Author

Tom Miller has been with Microsoft for a full decade. He specializes in bringing together managed code and gaming. He wrote and supported Managed DirectX, and for the past few years, he has been largely responsible for implementing the framework (graphics, audio, input, storage, and other core features) included in XNA Game Studio products. He currently works for Microsoft Game Studios.

 

Dean Johnson joined Microsoft in 2006 and helped launch the XNA Creators Club pipeline allowing hobbyists and independent developers to release their games on the Xbox LIVE Indie Games Marketplace. He currently is a Lead Software Development Engineer working on the XNA Game Studio product team.

 

Both authors actively blog and participate in game development conferences.

For what this book is attempting to provide - it does so with excellence. Unlike all the other XNA 4.0 books on Amazon this product is not a tutorial book, but a developers library. This means that though this book does not teach you exactly HOW to make the game, but gives you all the parts you would need to make the game - in most complete detail.

I personally do find this better, as unlike tutorial books (which have tutorials you could otherwise find easily online) it has everything you would possibly need and more. The code samples that are offered are written in a readable font whilst still distinguishing from body text, they then after explained in much more detail that I have seen elsewhere - line by line and are rarely just blocks of code.

I'd recommended this book to anyone who has used tutorials online as a stepping stone, and are now undertaking a bigger project. I would also recommend this book to more veteran users as it will enable quick reference for new methods or old ones you may have forgotten.

This is by a long, long way the best book for working with XNA 4.0 I have ever read, at most there is two errors in the whole thing and both are obvious, unlike others I have read that the code is so mangled you have to skip whole chapters. I have successfully worked through every chapter and everything is clear and easy to implement.

I bought this book hoping that it will help perfect anything I've picked up so far in XNA however I have found that the book is quite brief in what it is about. Now what I'm not saying is that it is a bad book, certainly not but in fact only for the use of people who are just entering the world of XNA and C# programming. Anyone who has some experience with XNA will probably find that this book is not as useful as they had hoped. However I recommend this book to all who are new to video game programming and have chosen to take a step down the XNA road.

I havent gone all the way through this book yet, I'm up to page 180, and so far most of it is learning just XNA, while it is very good at doing that, I havent learnt anything about actual games programming yet, that may come later in the book, but I get the impression this book is mainly about how to use XNA, so I believe this will be best coupled with another book that forcuses more on the game making process. But so far its going good
