As someone who does a lot of travelling around the country, I find it very useful to have a set of portable speakers that can be plugged into my MP3 player so as to listen to music without headphones. Unfortunately the sound quality you get from most portable speakers is very poor with the bass in particular, failing to impress.

When I ordered my x-mini, I did so because of the size and design rather than any expectation of performance. However, these portable speakers are a very impressive piece of kit, so impressive in fact that as soon as I had seen my first one in action, I went straight online to buy a second.

The speakers are powered by an internal battery which can be charged through an included usb cable. The sound quality is so good that I use my speakers as replacement for my laptops speakers when listening to music and thus running low on charge hasn't been a problem for me so I can't comment on battery life further than what the official statement has to say. The sound quality as stated before is very good, the speakers can't quite cope flawlessly with the loudest parts of some songs when everything is turned up to full volume, but I think to expect that may be unrealistic for a portable speaker in this price range. Even saying that the volume these guys can produce without any distortion is amazing. The bass is far superior to any of the other portables I've used and the size is perfect for just throwing in a bag when you're on the road. There is also a system in place which means you can "buddy jack" numerous x-mini's thus further increasing their sound output. All the equipment required for this, as well as charging comes included so you don't need to worry about buying extra cables or peripherals.

All in all these are a great purchase and I've already recommended them to some friends. They should be seriously considered if you're looking to invest in some portables. I honestly think they would be cheap at twice the price.

Great little speakers - plenty of sound and staying power - tiny and easy to transport bought two of these and use a left/right splitter lead to obtain true stereo (e.g. Maplin L39BA)

I have had 2 of these speakers, both of which have stopped working after little more than a year of pretty infrequent use. I have had to return both to Amazon who have kindly arranged for me to be refunded my money. I replaced the first one with a '2nd generation' model, but this wasn't any better. I think the manufacturer merely changed the colour without doing anything about the electronics. I certainly won't be buying anything from this manufacturer again!!

Let's start with some background which led to the purchase of this speaker. I used to listen to podcasts in the car with the speaker on my mobile phone. However, when I changed to an iPhone I didn't want to subject it to 3 hours of `almost maximum' loud speaker usage a day - that and the loud speaker is not loud enough to be heard over motorway traffic. So, I decided to look at other options.

My car is 7 years old and doesn't play MP3 CDs, nor does it have an AUX input to enable me to plug my iPhone to it. I went to Halfords this weekend just gone as they had a new fascia for my car which would allow me to get a new stereo fitted with both an AUX input and MP3 CD playing ability. All sounds good right? Wrong! The fascia was too small and after being contacted by Halfords yesterday I am told the manufacturer says that is the only fascia available for my car - FAIL!

So, this brought about another option - that of attaching a speaker to my phone. Only problem I found with most is that they would take their power from the iPhone and the sound was pretty poor, if reviews are to be believed.

Then I came across the XMI X-mini II Mini Speaker which is charged via USB, has 360 degree sound and reviews were very good. I ordered this from Amazon yesterday and it arrived this morning, courtesy of my 1 month free trial with Amazon Prime!

Don't be fooled by the size - while it appears small in comparison to my iPod Touch the performance is very impressive. Apart from being very cute, the sound quality is superb, and the volume was more than enough to cope with motorway traffic when I used it for the first time this morning. With a simple twist the speaker expands to play mode and after being turned on a little blue LED glows from the underside.

The X-mini II delivers an absolutely massive sound given its size with a very creditable bass and remarkable audio fidelity across the spectrum. Battery powered and rechargeable from computer USB, the X-mini has been designed so that it can be chained together with other X-minis for improved dispersion and volume. About the size of a yo-yo, you can happily stick it in your pocket and plug it into your iPod/iPhone etc for an instant party wherever you are.

Without distortion, we measured this speaker at about 95 decibels at 1m on fairly average music. That is loud! The highs go right up to 20khz, though they start to roll off after 16khz (like most people's hearing). The bass is quite extraordinary. It goes right down to about 80hz, which is a big, thumping sound which many much larger speakers can't manage. It's not a completely linear response -- there's a peak around 4khz which may tend to make the music sound a little insistent, however, like most things, you'll get used to that fairly quickly.

To get the full bass, you have to unlock the X-mini which then reveals an accordion-like diaphragm. You can use it without that, though. The bass sounds best when on a hard, steady surface, like a heavy desk or a wooden or stone floor.

Interestingly, although it charges via USB, it won't accept USB sound, though this is not a problem as the headphone jack sound is fine. I say this with a slight caveat -- the USB socket is marked 'charge - audio', but no audio was forthcoming from my Mac, and it didn't recognise it as an external source.
