About the Author

Initially serialized in Spirou magazine in 1984, "XIII" was created by Jean Van Hamme, the author behind "Thorgal" and "Largo Winch" - the latter in comic and book form as well as on the big screen - and William Vance, illustrator of the bestsellers "Howard Flynn," "Bruce Hawker," "Bruno Brazil," "Bob Morane" and "Marshall Blueberry."

Format: Paperback
This is an excellent action/adventure story, with very good artwork, which, while being ’European’, is also very reminiscent of old-fashioned American and British newspaper strip artwork, the sort of thing we used to occasionally see in American non-superhero comics many years ago.

This eighteenth instalment of the series is the end, as Danny Finkelstein’s books on ‘The XIII Mystery’ and the ‘Brian Kelly Story’ are published, and blow the lid off the secret conspiracies the US Government has been covering up. This leads to work for Irina Svetlanova and Executor, hired to get rid of any witnesses, and for Jessie Martin (Agent Diane) who is back with the NSA and is sent to bring the fugitives back to Washington for a Senate hearing. Frank Giordano and Felicity Brown visit his Mafia contacts in Mexico looking for help in getting rid of XIII and the fugitives, but they send him on his way, but keep Felicity, who offers them XIII and Maximilian’s Gold. They arrive at the hotel where XIII and the fugitives are based just as Irina and her team arrive, leading to a lot of fireworks… However, all the loose ends are eventually tied up, and after 18+ volumes, the story is bought to a satisfying close.

It may sound like an old fashioned spy/action adventure, and it reminded me visually of the old James Bond and Modesty Blaise newspaper strips – though this is in colour – but it was interesting enough to keep me reading all the series.

I've long since loved and admired this quasi Bourne series. . .that I have followed it in both the original French (hard going but worth it considering my school boy grasp of French) and it's eventual translation into English. The art story and characters make it compelling fare. Please ignore the comparisons to the Bourne books and films and enjoy the series from the beginning. For those who have been following it from the start this is a tidy ending to the saga.

Quite a lot to fit in to the last chapter of the series, so it ends up being a bit rushed and I'm still not sure who XIII actually is... Will have to read them all again!

The wonderful saga of XIII comes to an end(at least as Jean Van Hamme wrote it) in this book. The long time fans of this series will have a blast as to how Jean Hamme tied the loose ends and brought the story to a beautiful end.
