1.0 out of 5 stars Sony just don't care 19 April 2012
Great sound, easy to use and the all important snooze function for insomniacs. A fantastic little radio.......then a few months after warranty ran out the power point went on the radio. I have had two of these and the same fault occurred in both. Phoned Sony and to say they were not interested is an understatement. Pity as I had the analogue version for years and loved it. Probably will stay clear of all Sony products as a result of their customer service. Unfortunate as there are no equals for the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars New model coming 22 Jan 2013
By DaveT
Sound quality is good for a relatively small radio and better than my old Sony portable or clock/radio. Although the speaker is mono you can plug in headphones and get surprisingly good quality stereo with reasonable headphones. The sound is quite loud enough for most purposes despite only being rated at 0.3 watts RMS.

Build quality seems good and I expect it to last well.

Instructions are needlessly complicated and full of jargon however. Ensemble = radio network. Component = radio station. Secondary component = linked station. Hold slider = button lock to prevent accidental operation e.g. in your luggage which is useful to avoid flattening your batteries.

If you put a set of batteries in it then you only have to scan once unless you move to another region. It turns on to the last station listened to in 3 or 4 seconds. It retunes to another station in 2 seconds. Full rescan takes approx 1 minute. You can set 3 direct button presets for both DAB and FM (i.e. 6 in all) and add a further 7 each if you wish (making a total of 10 DAB and 10 FM presets). See manual on how to do this.

There's a clock but no alarm. Very usefully for me there is a sleep function (15/30/45/60mins). There's a backlight you can switch on or off. You can push the clock button to display the time even when the radio is turned off. There are various options for the display including scrolling text and signal strength. You can have 2 lines of small text or 1 of large text.

In a rural area near Oxford I picked up 30 DAB channels with excellent reception plus a few from neighbouring areas with poor reception. There doesn't seem to be a way to delete the poor quality ones. You can go through the channels one by one or hold it to scroll through more quickly.

This radio eats batteries and after 13 months (just out of warranty!) the power switch has gone rendering it useless...

4.0 out of 5 stars Really easy to use 15 Jan 2012

Good little radio, very easy to use and navigate. Easy to make presets (however loses the presets if you unplug the radio). Good clear sound however would have been better if it was a little louder but to be expected with a small radio.

4.0 out of 5 stars Battery life aside, its great 5 Aug 2012
By P
This is a simple to use high quality product. Others have said the battery life is low. Sony's web site says 13-13.5 hours and I wouldn't argue. I bought some NiMH re-chargeable batteries for mobile use and can use the plug in power supply when at home.

The speaker provides a good sound and headphones output is good too.

If you want a simple to use DAB radio for UK and European DAB+ too then this would meet the bill.

A set of rechargeable batteries and a charger can be bought for half the price of Pure's (not included) battery pack. The Pure is a similar price without batteries. As the Americans say - do the maths.

If I wanted an improvement it would have been an RDS chip for FM use - but primarily this is for DAB use.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exceeded Expectations 7 Jan 2013
This radio seems to have polarised opinion a bit! It seems well made and produces good results on DAB and FM even in the car. I live in a moderate signal area and it locks on to both the local and National DAB multiplexes. I haven't noticed any dropout or burbling even when driving around. It is compact and produces very reasonable sound quality in speech and music, though it's a bit short of bass as you might expect. I will be using rechargeables mainly and chose this over the Pure Move because a new set of decent rechargeables, if or when required, is fairly economic. Controls are easy to use a couple more direct presets would be useful in the car. All round good value for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good radio 28 Oct 2012

A good radio; more presets than just three would be useful. Other than that, fine.

This is just to make up to 20; no more to say
