Neat and simple, does the job
on 16 May 2014
I am using this Medium sized case with a GoPro HD Hero 2. It has enough room for the camera (in its waterproof housing), the battery charger, spare batteries, spare mounting pads, the extra SDHC chips, and most of the leads, USB, HDMI, continental mains and 12V car, but not the UK 13A mains.
The case is reasonably well made, but it does have some flex and can allow the camera to be squeezed. It is not waterproof but will shrug off some light dampness. The zip runs easily. The 33mm thick foam insert is a good fit in the lower half, and the 3mm thick closed-cell upper surface is about twice as stiff as the 30mm open-cell body. The cut-outs are not quite as shown in the main illustration, but near enough, and are actually better for my use.
I was delighted to find that the inserts were left filling the shaped spaces where the foam had been cut, because this allowed me to profile a thin upper layer (stiffer) slice of the camera shape to go in the well beneath the camera (lying lens down) with a hole for the On button and another hole for the lens. This arrangement prevents the leads in the lid pocket from inadvertently switching on the camera in the case, and also protects the plastic lens from being marked. It also means the camera sticks up about 20mm above the foam, using most of the space to the lid, where I have glued in another (softer) thin slice from the body of the camera shape to help prevent the camera from rattling about and to persuade the leads to rest elsewhere.
See my Pic 2533c for how it all worked out, and Pic 2534c for the detail of how the nest was arranged under the camera.
It was a bit of a faff doing all the cutting, when what I really wanted was a nicely shaped hard cover to simply drop onto the front of the GoPro 2 to protect the button and lens. These are available for the 3. Also I would have liked the case to be stiffer for more protection. My only compromise was not to squeeze in the 13A lead, possible but much too cramped.
