Usually I don't write reviews, either because I don't feel the need to do this (for items which already have a deserved good reputation) or because I don't feel qualified enough to judge a product in its whole. Yet, this time I just want to write a small advice to Xbox360 users, to help them avoid this particular product that may actually be a DANGER to their valuable (and fragile!) entertainment systems.
I recently bought these fans to help cooling an old day-one Xbox360 whose fans were coming to the end of their life. I honestly believed these were Talismoon fans, but now I suspect this is a cheap copy, or at least that Talismoon has put out a really bad product. They came in a slender paper box containing the actual fans, a power adapter (I guess it's meant for different Xbox power connectors), some rubber pads for insulation, and a strip of green paper to showcase the led color. :)
I opened my 360 and started the replacement. Plain and simple: the fans didn't fit. Their dimensions just didn't allow them to adjust to the Xbox 360's case. I thoroughly examined them for defects - residual plastic blobs, or maybe pins that were too large: nothing. The fans' casing was just one millimeter too big.
With the help of a grinding wheel, I adjusted its size to fit comfortably in the 360 case. Then I connected the power cord and I turned my Xbox on. A soft green light and a pretty loud noise (yes, the fans were actually LOUDER than the stock ones!) told me that everything was fine. At least for about five minutes.
When my 360 suddenly froze (while still on the dashboard!) I realized something was VERY wrong. It had never crashed, ever. I immediately checked the air flow in its back: there was none.
I opened my Xbox, and its inside was very hot. I left it to cool for some hours and then I turned it back on for a couple of seconds: then I realized that the damn things were blowing air IN REVERSE! They were actually SUCKING fresh air from the outside, instead of blowing the excess hot air from the Xbox!
As whoever has ever seen an Xbox360's fans housing can say, its very shape prevents them to be mounted backwards. The round curve on its back, the lower asymmetrical pins and the power cord location all force the fans to be placed so that they do exactly what they are meant to - blowing air from the inside to the outside. Yet these replacement fans did the exact contrary, and this almost cost me an Xbox 360.
So be warned. This product doesn't do what it advertises, and while I cannot honestly blame the seller (who was very fast and precise), I can't stress enough the danger that such flawed items may represent for your Xbox.
