Product Description

Manufacturer's Description
X³: REUNION continues to lead the way in offering players the ultimate open ended game play experience, backed by an addictive storyline and intense combat/trading action. Utilising the 'X³ Reality' engine, X³ pushes the graphical boundary to movie quality in-game graphics. TRADE in a new economy, dynamically reactive in pricing relative to supply and demand. FIGHT individual dog fights or command full-scale fleets against massive enemy armadas. Budding trade entrepreneurs can BUILD interconnecting factories to create huge space borne complexes, to truly mass produce commodities. THINK through a professional screen-written story line, to unravel the destiny of the galaxy.

The X³: REUNION engine utilizes the very latest DirectX 9 graphical technology; pixel-shader technology is used to create realistic reflections across a variety of surface types, while bump maps and specula maps add detail to the geometry of objects.

A freshly developed economy system allows for more imaginative ways to conquer your foes via commerce. Functions using established business models of 'Elasticity of demand', 'Economies of scale' and 'Return on investment'. Factories are constructed by non player characters, which can freely trade; wars in sectors affect the universal economy, while opportunities bring challenges to both novice and experienced players

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty difficult, but pretty good!, 25 Jul 2006

Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
X3 - Reunion is a game for space-sim enthusiasts - so it wasn't really anything for me I thought i nthe beginning. However, the reviews and the constant support by the developers and the fan-community made me rethink and so I went and bought the game.

First off, the game is graphically stunning, it is the most beautiful space-game out there, and if you ever saw your small vessel fly by a sun-wind-collector-array you know what "massive" means. The game's details are just great, be it a ship or a planetary station, its just looking phenomenal.

The sound and music of the game really help the atmosphere, though I would have preferred to see more in-game sequences with people rather than just the face in a little window on screen, it just makes the game feel a lot less "lively" like Darkstar One or Freelancer for example. And I think this is where the game really lacks - decent involvement with the character you play and the people/environment around you. You are just "there", you cannot identify yourself properly within the world, and you seem to have the feeling that not much of what you do matters in this (very large) universe with all its many sectors.

However this is where one should move away from the main story line now and then. The things you can do within X3 are many, you can trade, you can build and you can fly a lot of missions to gather fame, notoriety and a lot of credits.

Unfortunately the learning curve of the game is terribly high as there are no tool-tips nor any kind of tutorials to just guide you on what you can do and what does what. A real shame really, as you will be spending a lot of stressful hours trying to figure everything out.

However, once you are over that you will finally see and feel the massive depth the game has to offer, and you will be spending hours - maybe even days - on becoming the most notorious hunter, or the biggest energy magnate, or the best starfleet general or whatever you want to be and do!

Overall, the game is difficult, but great, and the constant stream of modifications from the fan-community together with patches of the developers ensure you will have a great time with that game!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very difficult at first, 21 Nov 2006
By Bryan A. (England, UK) - See all my reviews
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Originally a buggy game, this edition comes patched up to a perfectly playable version.

Still, the biggest flaw of this game seems to be that it has an astronomical learning curve at the beginning. Absolutely devilish learning curve. On the other hand, once you get over that it is an amazing game. It's not every day you come across a game this expansive and playable.

This game isn't for those suffering from ADD. If you are patient and like academic side of things, and if you like a bit of action, diplomacy and economy, I would give this a go. It's not for everyone, but you might just get lucky and find a gem.

4.0 out of 5 stars The more you play this game, the more you realise how much depth it has., 29 Oct 2006
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Firstly if you don't like the classic game Elite you won't really like or understand this game.

This game is not one you can really just pick up and play, you have to spend a bit of time to read the manual and get to understand the controls before you really can get the best out of it. Saying that i had no trouble as i love space sims and such like.

In the game you can basically do what you want. There is a plot but it is really their to help first timers to learn the game, i found it fun nevertheless.

You can really build you own empire in terms of building space factories, which their is a great deal to chose from and each race has it's own types you can build.

You can fly many different types of spacecraft from small scouts to big battleships. It also has A.I., so you can build a big fleet up to protect your factories and so on, while you go off and do different things as you please.

The trading aspect of the game is very good, as you can have your traders fly goods to different sectors and factories to buy and sell. You can also take on missions at space stations and the more reputation you get with one of the races and battle skill the more missions are available.

I don't know any game that lets you change the sectors you fly in with factories and build up an empire in economic terms to such a great deal, as well as lets you fly about and fight and so forth.

To be honest you do need to spend some time on it or your really not going to understand it or get the best out of this game.

The fan community is the best i have ever seen and many players have got mods for the game and so forth. If your stuck on anything they will help you :)

So if you like a challenge and want rewards for the time you spend on things this game could be for you. As i said if you like Elite you will like this game.

To be honest any review won't do this game justice as it is that deep.

Also as i said you need to put some time in to get into this game and if you can't put the time in you won't understand this game at all and get fed up.Which is a pity as this game has a lot to offer.
