Book Description

4 Mar 2010
Award-winning photographer Nick Veasey uses a variety of specialised imaging equipment to create images that see within. Often collaborating with scientists and boffins, he has built a strong body of work that enables the viewer to appreciate what goes on underneath the surface. The subject matter of these enlightening images is entertaining and wide ranging. X-rays are primarily used for diagnostic radiography and crystallography; they are a form of ionizing radiation and as such can be dangerous. Veasey works in a lead-lined studio that is locked, with him on the outside, during the exposure of the images. Geiger counters are used to ensure safety. Once the x-ray has been exposed on to film it is then scanned at ultra high resolution with special scanning equipment tailored for the process. These digital images are then composed and embellished on computer. The whole process can take weeks, or even months. Often improvising and experimenting, Nick Veasey has created images of the everyday and the bizarre. The contrasting influences of inner strength and outer beauty that these pictures highlight remind us all not to judge by outward appearances.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inside out art 28 July 2011

How refreshing to come across a book that will grab you open it any page. Nick Veasey's photo art gives you fresh take on the humble x-ray which is interesting because the technology has been around for years but how many photographers, in the past, had a big lead-lined studio and the latest GE digital imaging equipment.

The two hundred plus photos are divided into: Objects; Body; Nature; Fashion. I thought the Body was the most fascinating chapter. Seeing a landscape bus with twenty skeletons or a plane in a hanger, this time with mini skeletons, is rather awe inspiring. Objects produces some winners, too. Looking inside everyday things like an MP3 player, computer mouse, mobile phone or a movie camera will just make you look and look. I thought the natural world section didn't hold my interest as much as the other three chapters. Nature provides a staggering range of outside shapes and textures without even looking inside them.

The book is handsome production using a 175 screen on good matt art paper though the many black pages will probably show up finger marks eventually. The back pages have two hundred thumbnails of the book's spreads with very comprehensive captions.

Nick Veasey has produced one of those books that generate many repeat viewings.

Wow!! What a fascinating book! A quirky and unique view of life. This book certainly looked interesting when I saw it reviewed in a Sunday supplement and the reality doesn't disappoint.Definitely a talking point on anyone's coffee table.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true insight! 18 Sep 2010
By @GeekZilla9000 TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
I've seen some great books of photography, and most offer something unique - but this is definitely one of the most unique I've seen. This book is full of X-Rays - but not broken ribs, dislocated hips and bizarre anal insertions - it contains a massive variety of images ranging from leaves to technology.

Nature produces some incredible displays, and they are often successfully recorded by photographers, but when subjects such as flowers and even animals are captured by X-Ray we get so see a new world of delicate beauty. It's a world we never get to see and even the most mundane of things is turned into a fascinating picture as the internal structure is revealed.

Veasey is brilliantly creative, and as well as photographs which could have been taken in a small studio (assuming you have the relevant radioactive equipment!) he also has visions on a massive scale. Amongst my favourite pages in this book is a picture of an aeroplane in a hangar; the image shows the familiar outline of an aeroplane along with additional internal details, and to the side of it is a person whose small skeleton helps you to realise the epic nature of such a photo. It's amazing how a series of images which by their very nature strip the flesh from the bones can still convey so much personality.

In a nutshell: A fantastic book which can either be picked up and enjoyed for a brief spell, or a book in which you can completely immerse yourself and look in childish wonder at the raft of otherworldly images. Not only a marvel of technique, but a book with a sense of humour which isn't afraid to ask 'I wonder what the insides look like?'.
